crappy singers at jam nights

Ok, your at a jam night with the crew. You did your few songs with your guys, and now your just jammin with whoever comes up. Inevitably you get some drunk who thinks he can sing. After you give him a verse to embarrass himself really good what do ya do?

Let him continue and go on like nothing is wrong?

Come up behind him and knock his knees out from under him so he falls down and you can finish the song for him?

Make a quick ending?

Give the sign so a friend hurls a half full beer bottle at his head?

Lets hear some ideas............

Ugh. This is why I won't host open jams. You don't want to be a total jerk, but some people seem to have no clue just how awful they are.

Years ago I was in the host band at a country bar, we had an endless stream of wanna be female singers that couldnt carry a tune in a bucket, but most looked nice from behind, so we let em carry on.

Seems to me that this kind of thing simply comes with the territory. So I would be inclined to share lowfreq33's sentiments, and direct my creative energies elsewhere.

Rather people building a big, long list of "have you tried this?" suggestions, why don't you start us off by first sharing with us the tactics you've already tried?

This was mainly for FUN (as opposed to serious). Typically, I let them have at their shot. The whole time, though, Im thinking, man, maybe he will fall off the stage......(I certainly have lol)

Are you talking about the ones who typically sing somewhere near the key of X? Or the ones that are worse?

Pray the 150 harp players on the list are not encouraged to take an extra solo or two or three or... when their turn comes.

When at an open jam and lucky enough to draw a real wanker, I just try to remember we all had to start somewhere.

For me the payoff comes on those occasions when some out of nowhere set of killer pipes walks in and makes magic for a little while.

Never been to or hosted an open mic, but I like your signature fhm555! Best Doc I've ever known.

After the first verse is "sung", I'd just signal the rest of the band to play an extended finale, with much fanfare. After about a minute of finishing, say "Thank you. Next guest!"

I have been pretty lucky - i frequent a pretty good blues jam - and played for the house band for almost 4 years with David Bromberg. there were always a few off players....but its always a joy to play with the better ones. Heck - He even put up with me - and showed me some things so that I can even tune my bass all by myself now! These can be a good opportunity to teach if enough like-minded people are in attendance.

Not really got much to contribute, apart from when it happens to me, i just let them have their verse/chorus/verse and thats it. Ha. Also, diggin the fact we can say "wanker" so freely. Wanker. Ace.

Thank the scourge that is karaoke. We used to get chicks up & they would freak that the monitors were "so loud". Sorry honey, but now you can hear how bad you suck.
