Sorry guys. Don't know why it was "private". I've now made it public.

Great work, BassGen. Thanks for sharing.

My buddy John came over this afternoon and we worked on the bass for a couple of his originals. I got one down and about 1/2 way through a second. We're trying to get enough to put together some links to apply for a festival not far from here. No recordings of today, but before long, I think.

Went and found some old videos (from fall '07) of a blues night at my church, thought I'd share. Not really that great, my dad got a call 3 days before the gig asking if he could get a band together because one of the scheduled bands had dropped out. So we had 3 days to learn 10 songs, and the show was the first time all of us played them together. I also wasn't a very good bassist at the time. I've gotten much better since then.

My dad's on the left playing keys and guitar, my brother is drumming, the other guitarist is my dad's friend, and the singer was on one of the worship teams with us. Probably the best group of musicians I'll ever have the chance to play with.

Can't You Hear Me Knocking - YouTube

Fortunate Son - YouTube (This one isn't the whole song, it was our opener and the person that recorded them wasn't there to see us.)

The fact that you learned 10 songs in 3 days is a BIG deal in my book. Great job! Thanks for sharing the clips. You guys sounded pretty darned good for a last minute never played together before that night fill-in. I aspire to be this prepared.

Sounds pretty good to me Derek. Badge is pretty bass intense. You have to get it right or the song just won't work.

That they are - and based on the info on the website, they are supposed to be big enough at the top of the shaft to fit around my calves (which are probably sturdy enough now to be called heifers). Can't wait till they get here so I can see if they really fit.

hi all - great weekend music-wise - a blues project practice on Sunday, then a Vague Assurances practice today. We're finishing up our four new demo cuts and have a fairly high profile gig coming up in April, so we're working on a bunch of new stuff, from Black Keys to Tom Petty to Gillian Welch.

On a personal note - my mom seems to be entering the final countdown, so looks like I've gotta deal. Luckily I have three great sisters (hmm ... any coincidence I'm attracted to the Thumpketeers?) so we're all going through it together.

Sad but not tragic ... she's pushing 90 with 4 kids, 10 grandkids and I don't know how many great grand kids.

I'm glad to hear that you had a great musical weekend.

So sorry to hear about your mom, though. It's tough to be in that position, but at least you have siblings so you don't have to go it alone. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

thanks, Tat. It was a bass player who wrote the best ever goodbye-to-a-dying-parent rock song, that is, Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead writing "Box of Rain" for his father:

Grateful Dead - Box of Rain (Studio Version) - YouTube

It remains sloppy musically, but hey, it's the Dead. It's a great song and kind of how I feel.

Sorry to hear that Chuck3. I'm going through some issues with my mom right now as well. She'll be 90 in September and really struggling with her mobility. She's a tough bird but she's admitting to herself that she may need full time care.

Up to Christmas she was volunteering once a week at a care home, working the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle campaign and had spent considerable time on her Legion's Poppy fundraising efforts for Remembrance Day. Unfortunately the chronic back problems she's had all her life are finally winning. You are very lucky to have family close to you to help out.

The wonderful thing with being part of the CWB community is the moral support and kind thoughts you get from everyone.

I can really smypathize with these issues .... my family tends towards long life cycles so I've been down the "elderly care" path several times with parents/aunts/uncles .... But 90 + is a pretty good run, especially if there haven't been too many major health issues along the way.

Quick old-people story; One of my aunts on my Dad's side passed away in 1998. She was a bit of a wacky old gal, eccentric and super hard core Jesus lover. When she passed away my wife and I were given the task of cleaning out her apartment. She had all kinds of stuff in boxes labeled "for Jesus", most of which was used candles, pencils, some Bibles and hymnals, old magazines, three suitcases full of empty plastic shopping bags ... nothing really worth while at all. She did have some fairly valuable trinkets & original art work that we sold and gave the money to my Dad.

The most interesting thing we found was a cardboard box, roughly 18" x 18" with a label that said " Don't Throw Out - Very Valuable". It was really heavy, tucked away where no one would ever find it unless you were emptying the entire place. My aunt led an interesting life and we thought we had found the secret treasure that would let my Dad live out his years in wealth. The box was shrink wrapped, bound in duct tape and in a black garbage bag.

When we opened it up we found a half-used bag of rock salt .... no diamonds hidden inside,no original IBM stock certificates, nothing but plain old rock salt

We have found that these types of memories are the ones that we love .... we quickly forget the challanges and struggles of the end-of-life cycle

That's a great story! Isn't there a quote in the bible where Jesus said "I am the salt of the earth" or something like that? I wonder.....

I won't quote verses since there are rules about religious discussion and I don't feel like being banned this week, but salt was considered to be of special relevance in the Bible. It was considered a necessity of life, and symbolically used to signify permanence, loyalty, faithfulness and purification, among other things. The term "salt covenant" is a promise that can't ever be broken, for example.

LOL. My late grandparents would be proud. They never thought I listened in church.

Not just in the Bible. I think Roman soldiers used to get paid, in part, with salt. Hence the expression "worth your salt." The phrase in the Bible was, "you are the salt of the earth," from Jesus to his disciples - Jesus didn't say it about himself, as far as I can recall.
