If you are asking about FB as a business tool, Lee, I can tell you that my wife resisted using any social media for a very long time for nearly the exact reasons you listed ... but she finally gave in about 2 years ago and her business exploded She is in a weird business (art dolls) that has negligable "normal people" following it, but with the use of social media she has become very well known in her field.

Example: A few days before Halloween she posted a pic of a custom order she had just completed :

How many people do any of you know that would be interested in a Vampire Bride doll? Yeah, I didn't think so ... but when expanding that pic worldwide, there are a LOT of folks interested in such a thing. FB, and other social media like Pinterest, Etsy, even Twitter, reach out to a huge audience. If you have weird stuff and find that not too many people seem to care about it, stick some junk on the social media pages a few times and watch what happens ...

Hey all, did some craptastic videos for DT last night ( late late last night ) so he could hear how the Aguilar TH500 sounds. I played my Butterfly and also my daughter's Squire Jag for comparison.

Don't mind the ramblings, it wasn't a well planned adventure. I basically wanted to show how the head is able to easily handle a range of sounds, especially going from warm to more biting.

Hope they don't upset any one's dinner

I paused in the first one because I saw my camera blink so I thought it died ;-/

2. Friends who post inappropriate comments on her page will be "un-friended" or blocked (depending on the issue). This has happend twice.

3. She will not "friend" her mother or me. There are thing that I comments on, or comments my friends make that aren't appropriate for a 12-year-old. (I changed this rule when she turned 14 this year.)

Although there are some obvious dangers to social media, there are also a lot of upsides. For us, it makes staying in touch with the lives of our friends and family scattered across the country very easy.
Pretty much the same rules in our house with my 12yo. Although he and i are friends so that i can see what he posts but i do go look at his friends pages and make sure what they post that he can see is ok too. I do block him from some of my posts, and he is not to friend my work identity page or daddy's page and i have it set up so he can't see my comments to friends or the ticker.

The Teenager did myspace when he was that age, i saw no issues at all and when he made a facebook page a few years later i saw no reason to keep tabs on him. He's 18.5 now so it's not my business what he does anyway.

I use FB to actually feel like i have friends and stay close to people, i dont really have friends IRL and i find it really hard to make friends because most people won't take the time to see past my oddness and awkwardness to see who i really am. Right now, i don't actually have any friends who live here and i can just hang out and have a beer and BS with that aren't in my band (and i don't really hang with them too much beyond band stuff).

Besides, i like FB because i can hide behind the awkwardness and just be weird.

I don't use FB for reasons related to my work - I just don't want certain information "out there." My family and I e-mail and text either other a lot to keep up.

I do hang out at a couple of websites, including this one, where I like to talk to people and have made "real life" friends, including one I'm hanging out with tonight.

JaamE, I don't think your situation is that unusual. The way life is these days, there are a bunch of reasons why it's hard to have the "have a beer" kind of friends readily available to actually, uh, have a beer with in person. Besides Mrs C3, I too mainly hang out with the band or, more accurately, a small circle of friends that revolves around the band, one in particular who's not in the band. Funny, she too would point to her own "oddness and awkwardness" but I think she's great. You seem to be too. (Although a small sample size so far. But quite a sample it is. )

Damn Lee, that's a Crazy Train! Great work.

My construction business is all by referral. It makes life a bit more calm than monitoring a site in addition to a job site.

truth be told...I did not intend to work on trains

the owner came to me asking about some machine work. I made some suggestions and took on the job as a side project. I had no idea that they were worth anything

as it turns out, original hurlbut and MTC trains go for $120,000 to $160,000 when restored.
The only shop that did the restorations is now closed. The owner retired... So I am backed up until next summer, with work... Not a bad thing, in this economy

and if it turns out more profitable, I will do trains primarily, and bikes on the side

You do great work, Lee, especially with the bikes.

My views on facebook have changed quite a bit in 3 or so years. Currently, it serves sort of a old fashioned penpal type function, largely with people I have never met. I find the mundane details of the lives of artists, writers, fire-breathing mermaids, burlesque and sideshow performers, and european sophisticates I only know in a virtual sense to be far more entertaining than those of the people I actually know. It's also a great way to show off photographs.

My future ex-wife started a business selling facebook design and content for local businesses.

i know, and making friends at our age is hard, because most people already have had the same friends for years. Right now, since my kids are 18.5 and 12.5 and i don't have to just rush home after work anymore. At least i no longer feel guilty when i go to band practice, but i have no one to just hang out with either. My only other female fiend just had a new baby and is 20 years younger than me anyway.

So i'm here, hanging out with this crazy bunch and wishing many of you lived closer to me.

another "female fiend"? thought we had enough of those around here already.

yeah, I have thought many times that it would be nice if we all lived closer together. I've had dinner with Tat, and BassGen and Mrs BG, and both evenings were really nice. Seattle was actually already on my short list of places to go (I have several good friends there, but I've never been). But in the meantime, we'll just have to have a drink together online.

apropos of redheads - one of my sisters (my three real sisters, as distinguished from my several soul sisters), sent me this youtube in which Rita Hayworth's greatest dance numbers are synchronized to the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive." I don't think Rita Hayworth was a natural redhead, but she sure could dance, and whoever did this synchronizing was pretty clever and funny:

Talking with her and coming up with some guidelines and expectations will help her when she does go on line. Technology is a part of kids daily lives. Best we can do is guide our kids is the best ways to use it.

I recently got back on FB. It's pretty much the same crap but I'm keeping my site primarily music focused. I hardly post and don't get it when I see people posting dozens of random things daily. But that's what they are comfortable with and I'll use my page as I choose. There's room for us all.

Good luck. I hope you two can have a meaningful and productive discussion about being on line. You may find it is an easier way to know what she thinks and feels.

My daughter is 13. My rule for my kids was that if you want to be on FB I WILL be your friend. If you post it I will see it. If it is wrong I will call you out before all those other friends and then I will block your internet access. It's worked for me.

Well, you lucked out, you found the wackiest assortment of bass misfits on the internet.

I agree. In one sense, it is hard to make REAL friends when you get older. Not acquaintances, real friends. I have been fortunate as I have made many new good and caring friends in the last few years. I have also figured out what friends bailed when the going got tough and I needed someone to talk me down off the ledge. (You know I am talking about you ...) And some people really helped me through.

Ok, maybe we need some noise here...

I may have posted some of these before, but I don't care, that might have been a year ago.

Baby when you walk, you shake just like a willow tree

Jeff Beck, Rod the Mod, Micky Waller on drums, Ronnie Wood on bass. Awesome bassist as evidenced here.

The other versions drop one of the channels out.
Vinyl, but real to the original..
