We've officially welcomed the new guy (Rick) to the band on our Facebook page. I was really worried after seeing some of his video before the audition last week, but he's fitting in nice. He plays with a low volume and lots of nuance, has some really good strong lead vocals, makes suggestions not demands, and has a similar work ethic to the drummer and I. Yup - I think we're back on track. | Cool, it's always weird to add someone new. Our last new person was either going to learn to cope with our brand of crazy or run screaming... he still shakes his head at my sense of humor at times, but he plays well with others :-)
We're currently derailed until after the holidays, even though we could do this set on the 14th it's a stretch to even get there for some of us, plus we haven't added as many new songs as we wanted to. I'm less upset than i was last week. Since our group is part of the music school, even if the one guy does leave we'll still have people who want to play.

The bar had only opened about four months ago. Last night was their best night ever. It was packed the whole night. We played from 8:00 until 11:00 as agreed. When we finished the bar manager approached us and asked us to play a fourth set for additional money. The bassist declined so Bob and I played the last set as a duo.
Afterward we loaded the gear and drove four blocks to a friend's bar where a blues band was finishing their last set. It was perfect.
Tonight I had practice with GRR for the Hard Rock gig on Tuesday. We are ready to tear it up there.
On a down note, I had words with my sister tonight. Family can drive you freaking nuts sometimes. |

Wish I could be there for your Tuesday show. Take pictures from the stage so we can all live vicariously through you, okay? Keep your chin up on that last bit. Although i'd like to finish it, or at least add one more 'verse' to it. It may never be a song, like i intended but at least it could be a finished poem so i could share it with someone and have them understand how i was feeling.

I do some simple things to keep the Scandinavian side alive for my gilrs. Glögg is avaliable for every cold weather holiday and we hit Nordic fest / Yuletide festivals every winter.
There is one this Saturday in Boston at the Cyclerama building. Its funny because its somewhat of a conservative crowd at these Nordic fests but you see a lot of pseudo pagan traditions going on at them.
Xmas is celebrated with us, but we one tradition is bring the family and some hot Glögg to the beach. I don't care if its a blizzard, we are there. Quote:

There is always more then enough work out there for us out there...Its the right work to take, and thats always another story.

I really don't have any Christmas traditions, other than consuming more than a few beers and then setting stuff out before passing out. | Lutefisk is Norwegian, not Icelandic. We have our own set of inedible stuff as you have now discovered. I TOLD you not the look that up. Quote:

So..this year, I'm taking a few days off work and taking a road trip back home to visit my grand babies and see their excitement, then I'm going to take a couple of days for a Thumpketeer event in Chicago, and drive back to celebrate one of the granddaughter birthdays, then coming back home to ring in the new year with live music and poor decisions. Probably drink that night till my check liver light comes on......it'll be relaxing. | Check Liver Light. Perfect, I have a co-worker that would love that, a RatShack project box, a battery, and LED and some kind of intermittent circuit. That waould make a great homemade gift. Quote:

Interesting about the introvert part. I am pretty much as well (maybe reserved is a better word) except when I'm on stage. I'm looking forward to next spring when I get a new hip & can get back to prowling around the stage. | What is hip? Tell me Tell me. Quote:

The jam turned out to be righteous. This cat was an IT guy for a local bank, so when I walked in he looked surprisingly normal. He was very accomplished and could totally hang without being way louder than anyone else. Showed with a Les Paul and a beat up Fender Twin, which was a bit muddy. We hooked him up with a Mesa Boogie and his tone was awesome.
The guy was a chainsmoker so he had to run out every half hour to poison his lungs, but we started at 7 and played till midnight nonstop other than the smoke breaks. He fit in with us perfectly and is back for Friday, and I have just the right drummer in mind to call.
Total surprise, I have to hand it to my guitarist he qualified the guy really well.
The new guy was playing with a few Berklee grads that do nothing but argue endlessly about the nuances of the Led Zeppelin songs they have played 300 times, so a basic free form 'get down and show me what you got to go with this groove' jam really appealed to him, and he really got fired up after the first 30 minutes when we all got the mix, tone and groove into the pocket.
Major musical breakthrough.

So... tomorrow is the big (for us) gig. Yes, we are an opener and are only doing a 40 minute set. But, it is at a Hard Rock and it's for THE big local promotor. I expect that we will have a large, noisy turnout for us. Most of our group will likely walk after us to come to the afterparty at our house. (Which may or may not be an early party as we have a few retired folks coming that don't have a "check liver light".) If 50 or more people walk out after we play I
'm not sure how the promotor will feel about that. I guess we'll find out if it happens.
We put up a tree tonight...
Jackie and I have been together 4 1/2 years, so this is our fifth Christmas together.
Our first year together we didn't put up a tree. We had just started a major remodeling project and the house in Chevy Chase MD was totally torn apart.
We didn't put up a tree the second year as the house was up for sale and we had it "staged" for almost daily showings.
Our third Christmas we had just moved into this house and it was undergoing a major renovation. It was totally torn apart, we put up a tiny little tree in our office.
Our fourth Christmas we got a big new artificial tree and literally were taking it out of the box when we got the call thiat Jimmy was missing. We did zero decorating last year.
This year we went to put up our big new tree from last year... it won't fit... anywhere. lol
So we ended up putting up the tiny little tree from two years ago on a table in our living room. When we got donwe we both agreed that we wouldn't even want a bigger tree up. |
