Maybe I'm being too philosophical about this but
I think that GAS is an emotional and mental condition that is outside of the scope of "sound." Here on TB, we LOOK at gear and READ what people are saying about stuff. I, personally, have not listened to anyone's rigs yet it hasn't stopped me from being impressed by them.
The consensus seems to be that there is no cure for GAS but I think there is: you have to set up a situation where getting new gear is actually detrimental-- I'm not talking about "A Clockwork Orange"-- where playing any other piece of equipment doesn't sound right. To get so habituated to a sound that there is no desire or even concept of improvement. If GAS isn't a problem for you (i.e. the consequences are manageable) then its like having a glass of wine after work. For others GAS can be a real problem.
In the short time I've been on these boards, I've bought three items that I wouldn't have normally even known about. My rig hadn't changed for 15 years. I'm trying to be more careful.... trying... |
