someday i will learn and not have to deal with a dead bass on stage
luckily i just flipped a switch but the bass in passive mode was barely being picked up by the board and i now have blisters on my index ring and middle finger. i think one more song and i would have been a bloody mess on stage

Anyone consider routing a cavity in the back of their bass so they can swap out batteries quickly during a gig?

I have the Audere JZ3 preamp, and while I love it, it's a royal pain in the arse to change that battery. It's easy to get the plastic piece that you install; routing the spot is the hard part. I expect to have it done for me in a week or two. I'm sure it will be well worth the money.

If the preamp on your bass is that bad, turn the gain down so your battery lasts longer.
Also, three more syllables...su...per...glue. Yeah, it stings...but it works.
One more thing. Play smarter, not harder. Why the hell did your battery go out during a gig?
Don't you bring a spare???
Take it in stride. Prepare for next time.
Also, your bass has a passive mode?
Why didn't you turn up??? Do you have a sound man? Could he have turned you up???
A day in the life of the bass player.
Play smarter, not harder.
Bet your next gig goes better!

Joe. | yeah i play a tribute l2000 and it has an active passive switch. the battery went out because the guitard wanted to play a once through which ended up being a 5 times through, i had about 15 hours playtime on the battery now it is dead. the sound guy insist that the "board wont pick me up unless the volume on my bass is cranked
as for super glue it doesn't work for me. something in the oils in my skin it just flakes off i used electrical tape instead

As for the guy at the sound board...maybe, maybe not. He should have been able to help you out. If he doesn't have a DI for you, don't use him again. OR make sure you have a DI just in case!!!
Sorry you had such a crappy gig....but like I said, I bet you have a better one next time!

I have a Audere in my Nordy and I've played for several months without having to change the battery. IIRC, when it's time to change the battery, the blue LED will start blinking, and there'll still be a couple of hours of juice before it goes dead.
I've played active basses for years -- most of mine are active. I change the battery or batteries about once a year. I just make sure not to leave my cord plugged into the bass when I'm not using it.

Joe. | i might buy me a sansamp so i dont have to worry about this but on the other side of that idea is a passive bass in the same price point

Greg | This particular preamp, according to the company, does go through batteries faster than most, by about a 2:1 factor. Mine is the 3 band direct retrofit with the LED that goes "full on, battery power, full on" every time you plug it in to give you an idea of how much you got left. So it warns me before it gets bad... but 5 hours a night for a minimum of 3 nights a week will take its toll rather quickly. And I use the Low Z function a lot, which may or may not have an effect on the battery draw (prob. not, now that I think about it).
I just put in an Ultralife Lithium battery this last time - I even put a piece of tape with that day's date on the battery so I can tell how long it lasted. Let's hope it was worth the $7.99 plus tax; in order to do that, it has to last about 4 times longer than a standard alkaline 9V.
Either way, the "quick change" is going to make my life much simpler. I'm so sick of stuffing that battery down in there and trying to get everything just so before I can screw it back down.
