wut do you think music is.....im not looking for a specific definition, just like..wut you think Music is

What makes up music?

I personally believe music is expressing yourself and having fun. Enjoying life and really letting your music do all the talking!!!

music is freedom of expression and anything that makes you feel, a pulse lets say.

All good music has a pulse, whether it makes you do air guitar (or bass), headbang to it , dance to it or just tap your fingers.

agreed. having said that something that makes one person "pulse" may not do the same for another, and then we have to start thinking that if it's music to one person, is it still music? i know country doesn't make me "pulse" but would i go as far as to argue that it's not music? just something to think about.

Careful. Don't define what "music" is by "because I like it". the definition I use with my classes (yeah, I am a music teacher) is "Art of sound using the elements of pitch, timbre, duration and dynamics." Yeah, dry... but then we can discuss music objectively without the "I hate {A. country B. rap C. classical D. rock} so it is not music" getting in the way. We can talk about WHY we like or dislike, but because I can't stand something, don't mean it ain't music...

Sorry to get all academic on y'all

You just pick up a chord, go twang, and you've got music.

Purely subjective.

What is art?
What is music?
What is beauty?

For each of us the answer is different.

To you I might not be a "very good bass player".
And you might not be to me.

These "definition" threads are maddening at times because we are spinning our wheels trying to define what can't be defined.

Definition Of Music?

Not to be overly logical about it, but isn't music essentially the arrangement of sound, and a lack of it (silence?) in a space of time?

Sam,
I think you'd have better luck with your last thread, "defining a musician", but, potential train wreck I predict.

Maybe not exactly baited, but a loaded question at best.

Read "This Is Your Brain On Music." Great book! It explains why we like music in great detail.
