IMO, I think it could have been handled a little better on both ends. A band I played with seen me come in with my Ashdown (one of about 6 heads I own) and they did the same thing. I used a cheapie Yamaha 5 string through it. At first, they looked unsure, and the guitard asked me why I didn't bring professional gear (I played the Ashdown through my old Ampeg cab). The only thing I did was smile and said "you'll see". When I played, they really liked the sound that I had, and hired me for the gig. Essentially, the way you both approached it was a little tense. I suspect that there were other reasons why didn't take you initially, then after their research, and after they debated that you were indeed the best quality player they auditioned, they approached you. At the same time, there may have been a better player with the gear they want in the band who won the audition, and he refused making you the next best choice.
Not any of my business on your reasons to refuse their offer to play, it is ultimately yours to make, and I am quite sure you are happy with it.
