IMO, I think it could have been handled a little better on both ends. A band I played with seen me come in with my Ashdown (one of about 6 heads I own) and they did the same thing. I used a cheapie Yamaha 5 string through it. At first, they looked unsure, and the guitard asked me why I didn't bring professional gear (I played the Ashdown through my old Ampeg cab). The only thing I did was smile and said "you'll see". When I played, they really liked the sound that I had, and hired me for the gig. Essentially, the way you both approached it was a little tense. I suspect that there were other reasons why didn't take you initially, then after their research, and after they debated that you were indeed the best quality player they auditioned, they approached you. At the same time, there may have been a better player with the gear they want in the band who won the audition, and he refused making you the next best choice.

Not any of my business on your reasons to refuse their offer to play, it is ultimately yours to make, and I am quite sure you are happy with it.

i think i'm a reverse gear snob!

so much so that whenever i see a band setting up and the bass player is under 40 with a Fender and an Ampeg 8 x 10 fridge behind him on stage....i usually write him off on the spot...

Irony much?

That seems to be just as bad.

I hope this kind of snarking on someone's gear disappears when people my age (29) are the "old farts." I grew up with 80's hardcore punk and 90's indie, with the DIY ethic. I like having a good sound, but don't care how someone gets it.

Keep hoping. Where you have humans, you have pissin' contests.

perhaps, but it has been my experience in my local scene that punk kids buy this stuff as they perceive it to be cool, or the be all end all....I recently saw a kid playing a beat up old Fender and the strings were literally almost an inch off the fretboard through a SVT4 and an 8x10 fridge that had seen much much better days....the sad thing is he had a perfectly good Hartke HA3500 and an older 4x10HSMX with an Ibanez that IMHO a million times better than what he was playing....but don't you see he was cool for playing the Fender and the Ampeg...lol....I bought the Hartke head for $150.00 and put it to good use...sadly this kid is still playing the Fender and sounding like crap...and i see this happen over and over and over again....another buddy of mine picked up a really nice GK this was as well....

so yea it may be stereotypical and completely wrong of me to feel this way, but it doesn't make it anly less the truth
