no it's more of an irrelevance thing... just because someone doesn't know something doesn't mean they are lazy.

I know people that never even listen to music... ever! Someone like that or even the casual radio listener, why should they care what a bass guitar is (or let alone any instrument).

I get this quite a bit, but usually it's from my grandma so i'll let it slide. I will correct some people, but sometimes it's not worth the effort. It's rather foolish to get offended by such a thing.

I don't mind what I'm called, but I was incorrectly called a guitarist in a newspaper interview, even though I never played guitar and have no plans on playing it seriously. This resulted in people in my hometown trying to get me to play gigs as a lead guitarist or rhythm guitarist or as a soloist, and when I told them that I was really bass, they just said "oh" and hung up the phone or walked away. Fortunately, by also playing the piano, I can get a few more solo gigs to make up for it.

i prefer being called a guitarist. B/c i confuses the heck outa ppl.
Them: What do you play?
Me: Guitar
Them: Oh...so wait theres 3 guitarists in your band?
(i have a rythm and a lead guy)
Me: Yep
T: what about the bass?
M: i play bass
T: I thought you played guitar?
M: I do

then it goes on with the best of abbot and costello for a while.
Or this is always a funny one

Them: Dude this song:"Insert extremely hard mainstream guitar solo crazy song ie Hanger 18" is soooo hard to play! Can you play it?
Me: Yep.
THem: Reallly??!
Me: Yea its not that hard
Them:

But once i did get called a guitarist by our school news paper, and that did make me a little annoyed, surprizingly.

I play Bass guitar, guitar and Double Bass, so I cant be complaining about being called anything except a cellist. I think we Double Bassist take it worst of anyone just because we get the "dont you wish you chose flute" jokes and other berating remarks about size and people generally dont know the difference between a Cello and a Double Bass, but all you really can do in the end is just politely say " Actually Ma'am or Sir its a bass guitar/Double Bass, but we prefer to call ourselves bassists.
