Drawing a Crowd in a Different State

My band plays a lot of shows in New York City and Long Island, and whenever we do this it's easy to get a good crowd. All we have to do post it on MySpace and tell our friends, sell some tickets, etc.
But now we're starting to expand a little. We're looking at possibilities in upstate NY, New Jersey, we even have contacts in Boston.
We played a show in Hoboken, New Jersey last night at a place called Maxwell's, and it was damn near impossible to get people to go. For one thing we went onstage over an hour later then scheduled, so even the people who weren't there specifically to see us were getting tired and started leaving. Regardless, we had only a handful of people who were willing to take the trip.
So does anyone have any suggestions on how to draw a crowd in unfamiliar territory? This includes finding new people on location, or just bringing the usual crowd to a long-distance gig, how do you do it?

Get on a gig with a local who draws a crowd, and play before them.

Gig trades are always good - set up a 'home and home' with bands from new areas you want to break into. You go down and open for them at one of their strong clubs in their home town on a Friday, and then they open for you on Saturday at one of your strong local venues.

You might also try to get some exposure on the college radio station(s) in the area.

It is next to impossible to get a New Yorker to take the train to Hoboken, they act like it's a world away instead of one stop over the river. Maxwell's is nice but Hoboken is a cover band kinda town.
