I've never played a gig wearing a tie before, let alone a white silk dinner jacket. I thought I'd be uncomfortable, but I really kind of enjoyed it. The ladies were appreciative, at least the cougars were. I got to thinking about the old R&B revues, where everyone dressed sharp.
Anyone else dress up for gigs?

Even private parties where we could get a request for anything and usually end the night playing R&R, it's always at least a suit and often a tux. I feel kinda weird playing without a coat on now.

| | | I like to do something a bit like the OP when by myself, but when I'm playing with the company (rare now ), I wear a button up shirt with island type print and all white pants. Scrub pants work nicely.
I think there was a thread like this already... Not to be a bother. Just sayin'.

Nothing overly fancy, just nice enough. It was weird. I normally play wearing a t-shirt and jeans. I would like to play wearing a suit someday. There's somethin' about wearing a nice suit while rocking out, all sophisticated and the like, that's just awesome.

I play mostly jazz and am female, so dressing is a big deal, but it should be for guys too. I kind of cringe when a band member shows up at a nice place in jeans and a wrinkled shirt and tennis shoes. I think the audience notices that a lot too.
Last weekend, I went to see a fairly well known group at a jazz place. They were all dressed alike (do not recommend that for a small group!) in dingy shirts that looked old and faded and fit poorly, like they slapped on janitor like uniforms for the gig. I said to my friend....sheesh these guys need some new clothes. Funny, that's what I remember most about the performance... the dull clothing, when a good part of the crowd was dressed up and out on date night.
The following evening, I went to hear a jazz trio. The guys all wore jackets and ties and nice slacks. Dress shoes. They really looked sharp and their playing was awesome as well. They had their set list prepared and did all the other things that make for a good performance too. Real pros.
Yes, it makes a difference. Maybe its true that us ladies really appreciate this, at least I do. If I had to choose between hiring two players of equal ability, I would choose the one I could count on to dress nice for the gig. |

But I always wear a leather vest, that differentiates me from the audience. That might not work if we ever play a biker bar |

Hawaiian shirt to gigs. Black penny loafers (I usually come
straight from work).
Based on jgbasses comments, I think, even though I am
usually the best dressed at the gig, I may upgrade a bit
more, just to see how that works out. I have had a few
recent art gallery gigs where a full bore suit a la Robert
Palmer would not have hurt. Coat and tie might have got me
some extra attention or respect that I may have missed.
Worth a try out anyway.
Doesn't really cost much to look good if you have the clothes
in the closet anyway. I happen to as I needed them
sometimes for work.
