I feel sorry for you guys. Our current drummer is *awesome*.

He drops his sticks a lot. But that's just rock and roll, baby!

And he doesn't know where the one is. But he can find it by randomly banging his snare until he gets on, like a man boarding a moving train. That's kind of his jazzy side.

Also, he doesn't really know how the songs go, or what they are called, or how they end. But it's awesome. Those extra couple of drum hits after all the rest of us stop playing are like those old sci-fi/horror movies that go, "The End???" at the end. It adds to our mystique.

He needs me to cue him for every change. By "cue" I don't mean nod when a change is coming. I need to go up to him and kind of sing how the next part goes. So basically he is teaching me how to do background vocals while I play, which is really going to make me a better musician.

I think the most awesome thing about our drummer, if I *had* to choose one thing, is that he insists on always playing really, really stoned.

So, are you saying he played with himself for 8 years?

On a less immature (and more relevant) note, I cover the majority of the bass workload for my church's music teams. There are four drummers that rotate through.

Three of them are great guys, really on top of things, who know how to play, learn the songs and do a great job.

Then there's the fourth guy. If he's on, he's fine. If he's having an off day, he can't remember the songs, can't keep time, drops out in the wrong spots, forgets fills and can be a train wreck. So, basically the same stuff everyone else is talking about. Nice enough guy, but it can be rough.

I just started playing with a new drummer, if he actually shows up to gigs, makes 2 out of 3 practices, and doesn't constantly knock over his own cymbals and ask to borrow gas money, then he'll be the best drummer I've ever played with. The worst drummer I ever played with habitually did all of the above, but I married his girlfriend at the time, so I guess we're even.

I have to play with a percussionist once in a while who does not know the difference between a 3/4 and a 6/8 rhythm, and worse, doesn't care.
