Drummers , sigh!

Sign in to disble this ad
so i had this gig last night , and we were playing mostly our own stuff ( rockish blueish ) and we did 1 cover , purple haze - jimi hendrix , and for some bloody reason the drummer wants a drum solo against the last part of the song ( pretty much the guitar solo ) so we do that fine , it gets pretty climatic , not to mention the drummers timing is ****ed up , and he uses a double pedal for everything........ he only uses the double peddle in the last 2 seconds of the song ( the spam **** and end with the crash ) ... sigh , me and the guitarist just want to song to end really calmly and fade out but we seam to have no say , he seams so happy with his out-of-beat / timing drum solo ...
just wanted to say it :/

At least you have a drummer with drums. We have a drummer with a cajon and doesn't own an actual full kit and asks "can't I just use yours" to the guitarist.

Figure out a way to record you guys playing that song and let him hear how bad he sounds.

When I was in college, I played in a country band with my cousin. The drummer in that band, aside from being one of the worst I've ever played with, absolutely had to have the last hit on every song - even on songs that had clearly defined endings (i.e. most traditional country songs). Kind of like in the days when cars had carburetors and on a hot day would sometimes keep running after you switched the ignition off.

Sometimes I wonder if these are character traits embedded in the personality that have found a vehicle to act upon in music. There has got to be a psychology behind this behavior.

That's a pretty accurate metaphor.

Here's what the guy above would do. We would end a song, and as the music was fading here he came - da da da da, duh duh duh duh, doo doo doo doo, dump....brap brap brap. And he did this on virtually very song.

It was one of those gigs that I would have never taken in most circumstances. but it was the same cousin who loaned me the bass and amp that I learned to play on. That, plus the fact that I usually got at least $50 a night (not bad for the '70's) and we NEVER practiced - I remember two actual practices in the three years I played in that band.

Some drummers have that "guitarist ego." Being a drummer that used to work in a drum shop, I've met a lot of different drummers and a few of them just drove me nuts. One guy I knew was in a Disturbed cover band and he thought he was god's gift to drums, there was no convincing him otherwise. He really wasn't that good. I think some guys figure out a simple quarter note beat and think that's it, they're rock stars. Those of us who know what we're doing don't like to show off. There's a musical aspect to drums that doesn't always call for being loud and showing off. We need to know when to shut up and let the rest of the band shine.

I'll use one example: Josh Freese. Look at his list of credits, I never knew he was on half the albums he was on until I actually looked it up. Going back and listening to some of the stuff randomly, I can tell it's him, but he doesn't really make it noticeable, I can only tell because I know his style.

Sorry for the rant, I guess all I can say is we're not all idiots. I guess the best thing I can say to a bassist with a drummer issue (playing both myself) is do what you can to get him to realize he has to groove with YOU. Maybe try getting a beer with him and talk music. Every band I've been in, I've been very close with the drummer or bassist when I've been playing opposite of them, and we've always grooved well.

Bassists are the glue that hold the band together. Drummers and guitarists need to realize that.

Ok, I'm done now. Sorry guys.

Yeah, he'll listen to your recording and conclude that his "awesome solo" was far too short...

I dont know why drummers have to do this... My drummer is afflicted with this same disease. I know this is just a rant, but when a less is more approach sounds better for an ending, he has a nack for adding an 80's flair. It can be so dissapointing

Talking Drummers :P Don'tcha Love 'Em <3

I Love Drummers!!!............. But I do think they have issues sometimes... I'm a Female Bassist. So my encounters with drummers are either their way to egotistical to pay attention to me or they can't stop gawking or changing up the beat to see what I like

The Drummers in my band currently are some spazzes heheh!!! And they love those long fills Sheeeeesh!!!!!! We Play Jazz and Funk mostly so there's usually alot going on as it is and the drummers just back there going to town on his 16 toms At jam sessions I usually play with any random drummer that's there and those guys just wanna cater to me (the Bass Player) and forget that were playing with a whole band haha! Its cute but you don't have to change your beat every four measures just to see what excites me

But Hey, I'm A Female Bassist And I LOVE ME SOME DRUMMERS!!!
