Drummers and their sticks

Sign in to disble this ad
While playing at church this morning in the middle of one of the songs I felt something hit the back of my head. Surely enough as I look over I see one of the drummers sticks laying on the floor. I was a little distracted by what had happened so I finished the song rather sloppy luckily the rest of the band did not stop. What makes the story even better is the drummer was playing in a drum cage so the stick must of gone pretty high to get over it and then hit me on the head. After the song the whole band as well as the congregation laughed about it as it was only a mistake not purposely done.

What are your stories about drummers and their sticks? Any ever hit you while playing? Sitting in the first row in music class I have also gotten a few battons flunk my way. But maybe thats for another forum :P.

I've had drummers intentionally throw sticks at me but never by accident. Sounds like you were just in the right spot at the right time.

Yes, Had a drum smasher...can't really call him a drummer, since he hit the skins so HARD. One of his sticks broke, and sailed by my head close enough to make me jump back a few feet and rethink my setup location.

In my experience it's usually when he accidentally hits the bottom of a cymbal with the tip of a stick on an upstroke that the stick goes flying.

Stuff like that happens, keep things protected: speaker grilles on monitors, nothing precariously balanced or easily knocked over, etc. is about all you can do about it.

I had a stick thrown at me intentionally too, over a minor fight me and my drummer had. But never by accident.

I swear, our drummer slops vaseline all over his hands sometimes... At our practice yesterday, he managed to hit his stick bag while playing, causing one to fly up in the air and nearly hit me

I use to play with a drummer that always threw his sticks when something didnt go his way. We would tell him to stop, but he never did. He didn't throw them hard. After a few months I tired of the behavior. The next time he threw his stick, I caught it and threw it back at him, hard. Hit him on the arm. He got a shocked look on his face, packed his kit and left. Never said a word, and we never heard from him again.

You keep your drummer in a cage? In church? Respect!

We prevented it in church by investing in Tennis Racquet grip! Worked wonders

Maybe a hard hat is a good idea?

Yeah, I'm a drummer, and I drop/throw sticks about all the time. Usually by accident.

One of the reasons to avoid any eye contact with the drummer, or you should be wearing eye protection ...
actually, best to wear all kind of protection when dealing with a drummer

Since your drummer is playing in a cage, you should put up a sign saying: WARNING: Do not anger drummer at all times.

My old band actually did something along those lines with our drummer. He thought it was funny.

Just don't look us drummers straight in the eye. Like wild animals, we take as a challenge.

I'm continually pelted with splinters. I had a really big one lodge itself in my ear in the middle of a song once. I couldn't do anything about it but shake my head, which was completely ineffectual. Makes me shiver just thinking about it.

My drummer will often throw sticks to me. I'll catch them and throw them back. Although there have been occasions where I've held onto them and used them to play my bass. That's actually a lot harder than it looks.......
