Embarassing Facebook Mishap

So, I got together with my new band today, learned some songs, recorded some stuff, etc. So we decided we'd come up with a name -- Nexus -- and create a Facebook page around it. So, we create the Facebook page, I update all the info, everything's going great, and we decide we'll start inviting people. But, apparently, you don't invite people. You add people, and they're in the group, whether they like it or not. So, to get some publicity, we add everybody in all of our friends lists. People are excited, and we make promises of posting our first recorded song (we just had to figure out how to convert it)

Total count : 174 members

Well, then, people start getting a little upset. We didn't realize that people got notification for things that happened. Everything that happened. Everytime we updated our wall or information, they got a post. So, people started getting a little irritated. So they decided they would, en masse, post on the wall complaining about the notifications they were getting. This just added to the heap of notifications getting sent out, so more and more people started complaining. It turned into a vicious cycle

Within an hour, some people had gotten something like 170 posts and texts from their phone. So, out of the 170 people we added, about half of them started sending us hate mail, about 40% never got to se it, and around 10 were trying to support us.

Some enterprising young people decided to take advantage of the ability to notify people. One of them posted "NOTIFY" over and over again. Then he posted a message saying "175 people will get an e-mail when I click this little blue button"

In order to protect our name, we changed the name to "Nothing" and the description to "Lol." until we could find a way to delete the group. When we logged onto the group, we got the following message:

"Welcome to Nothing. Lol"

In addition, Facebook's added a new group chat, so that ended up with something like 600 messages in a matter of minutes.

Anyways, we decided to delete the group (by manually deleting everybody and then removing ourselves).

So, in the time span of about an hour, we got about 100 people mad at us. We also decided to delete the group, nix the name, and start fresh.

Sometimes I wish my age group was more mature. haha

that's a bummer man. it sounds like you created a group as opposed to creating a page. big, big difference. it's been a while and i've forgotten how exactly to create a page, but i think that's what you want to do. good luck dude

So how does it feel to be Dr. Frankenstein?

The monster you created is exactly why I backed out of facebook with that stuff and continually getting - from Tammi or whomever - "I saw your profile and pictures and would love to meet you." Never posted any pics. Just a product of the wonders of the internet. You might consider a more traditional and inexpensive site to have your band info etc.

When you set it up correctly next time you need to send an apology to the folks you spammed - just good PR and think of a way to turn the mishap into something positive for your band. My 2 cents.

My bass part's pretty bad in the beginning. I was improvising to the drum track we had recorded, so I'm pretty off time there. But we decided that we couldn't call it an improv if we did more than one take.

I figured out what I was doing wrong. I tried adding an extra quarter note with one of the drum hits, so I was entirely in the wrong time and rushing to get back to the 1.

Oh, well. Live and learn, right?

By the way, is one of you guys Jamey Pierson? I've got no mutual friends with him. But if so, thanks for the support!
