Shoot - I have done the same thing. Never at a gig though and usually while I was distracted by someone. I toss an old set of strings in my case "just in case" something like this happens at a gig. As they say in the old country - "Oops!"

There had been someone playing along on my bass and apparently they transposed the keys because the sheet music was written for a 5 string bass and I play 4 bangers. I went to tune up before our first set and they keys were way out. Figured keys are digital so they're not going to fall out of tune and started tuning to them when "SNAP!" Broke a low E at 5 on a Sunday afternoon with no backup available. I managed to pull a string off of a bass I had sitting at my house that hadn't been used for several years.
