So what are the songs you'd love to play live, but probably never will because they are too complex, require a group of significantly talented musicians, aren't really appropriate for the kinds of gigs you play, etc.
A couple of mine would be
A) Meatloaf's[1] live versions of Bolero/Bat Out of Hell
B) A TSO Christmas show
[1] A Meatloaf tribute band would be great.....good luck finding someone for the Meatloaf part. |

| | A figment of our exaggeration | | Join Date: Aug 2007 Location: Way Out West | | | I don't know if anyone else feels this way about some of their favorite songs, difficult or easy to learn, but sometimes when I learn a song (say 2112 for example) the "magic" can disappear from it for me. It's as if I found the key to unlock the secret of of it. After I do, the song means less to me than it did before. It's cool to be able to play 2112, but now it's not as exciting for me to hear as a listener. Because of this, I tend to stay away from learning certian tunes. Is this wierd? |

| | bassist for staind | | | | no thats not wierd. your smart enough to preserve those songs. it shouldent lose any magic though, yeah you can play it, just like i learned schooldays way back. but i am still amazed he actually thought the whole thing in his head, i only copied him... many sculptors can sculpt and copy "the thinker" but they would never be able to create it from scratch with that execution and brilliance themselves. johnny a. |

But to answer the OP's question, I would respond with The Gates of Delirium by Yes.

If I had to cut it down to one it would definitely be Gates.

Anything from Lynyrd Skynyrd.
It's nearly impossible to convince ONE guitarist to give room for other instruments/vocals, let alone three + the keys. And that's a real shame.

I played in a Steely Dan tribute band (here's how we sounded in the basement http://zebb.info/BabylonSisters.mp3), and some of that happened to me there. I discovered some of the real genius is what the bass is not playing, and the interraction with the other instruments.
But, back tothe original topic, "Joe Frasier" by Jef Berlin/Bill Bruford. Just ain't gonna happen...
I've played many of the songs listed here (2112, La Villa, Funeral), and boy are they fun! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
