Not too long ago, I had applied for a job managing the bass dept. at a large music store. On the day of the interview, I arrived early (as I believe that one should) and the store manager stated that he would not be ready for me for about a half hour. He instisted that I hang around and demo the product they had in house. Now I really didn't feel comfortable w/that, I didn't think it would be professional noodling around with the gear at this point. He strongly insisted once again, almost to the point of begging. Against my better judgement I agreed.
I looked around the room, not really finding much that I would like to try, and settled on testing out a used Fender American P-Deluxe. I plugged into a used SWR rig, turned the volume down, and began to play. I noticed that my playing began to draw people to the bass room (not because of my skill level, but just because I was making noise). I was starting to loosen up a bit. I really wasn't diggin the sound I was getting, so I tried a few more rigs in the room. I noticed that even more people started coming toward the room. I figure that this could really be a good thing for me showing that I could really be an asset for the store. I decided to get down and dirty with it for a bit.
I saw a new Lakland 55-02 on the wall right above an Eden WT800 sitting on top of an Eden 2x10 and 2x15. Even though I'm not a big Eden fan I figure...What the hey! Why not show the people what the best bass and the best rig in the store sounds like!
I plug the Lakland into the Eden rig. Turn all gain and volume knobs down on both and power up. Nothing. I slowly turn the master up on the bass...still nothing. A little more gain. Nothing. I put the Lakland into passive mode. Nothing. I turn the master up a bit...POP! The pop was so loud I nearly dropped a load in my pants! Before I could get to the power switch POP CRACKLE POP! I finally hit the power switch, but not before a small crowd gathers to investigate the noise. As the smell of smoke permiated the room, the store manager comes to the room to inform me that he's ready to interview me! As I'm placing the Lakland on the wall he asks "Do you smell that?" I am usually a quick thinker, I came up with the best answer I could think of and responded with the most suitable answer for the occassion. I replied "Huh, what smell?" He looks at me as if he just caught me with my hand in the cookie jar. We proceeded with the interview. Needless to say, I didn't get the job.

The funny thing was the store manager stated that he wanted to bring me aboard, but he didn't have a way to fit me in the budget. I wonder if that's because I'd cost the store alot more money due to me destroying the inventory!

At the same time, if I was in charge I certainly wouldn't hire an employee who lied to me about something like that. Yes, it looks bad, but better to fess up, explain what was going on and hope that the manager understands that you were taking all the proper precautions and being gentle to the equipment when it crapped out on it's own. |

It was only the stand (built into the bass, so it still counts), but still incredibly embarrassing... still, the thing looked like it was made of pot metal...
