Ex Bandmember Sabotages Gig!?

Sign in to disble this ad
What would you do?
An ex-guitarist member is rumored to have called and cancelled a gig on us and is trying to get us blackballed from venues. His wife evidently is egging him on? Holy cow! Could this be true? The guitarist did not take it well at all when told he was being replaced. Why can't we all just get along?

Unfortunately, it happens. I was in a band a few years ago where a former member started posting bad things about us on Craig's List. Talking about how much we sucked and telling people not to go see us play. I have also talked to people in other bands who had a former member call and cancel gigs just to get back at them. One was an ongoing gig for every weekend during the summer at a lake marina! By the time the real band members found out the venue had already booked a new band to fill the opening!
I would suggest contacting the places you play or plan to play and let them know the situation. Tell them that you are still very much together and to disregard any contact unless it is made by a specific person who actually represents your band.

Sounds like he needs to grow up if that's true. How was he told of being replaced? Face to face or some other method? Whoever books your gig needs to let the clubs know that he is the only one who speaks for the band.

Talk to the clubs you're booked at. Explain the situation and make it understood that the only guy that books or cancels anything from now on is YOU!

+1 to all of the above. Honesty is the best policy when dealing with club owners (which also applies to private party clients). It might feel a little awkward calling these places up and telling them that so-and-so is no longer with the band -- especially if that person is considered to be one of the "stars" or "draws" of the band -- but it needs to be done if there was any animosity at all between the band and the departing member.

If the member who left / got fired is also the member that set up the bookings, well then it gets a bit trickier. In those cases it is even more important that you pro-actively let the clients who have booked you know the situation as soon as possible, since the ex-member no longer has any claims on the bookings of his/her former band. It is not unheard of for a BL who was fired or quit to quickly throw together a new band and try to "poach" the gigs of the former band for his/her new project. This is beyond low IMO, but it does happen.

Sounds like time for Small Claims court for lost earnings! Let's see...4 band members at $5k each equals a lesson he won't forget!

If your ex-band member is a reprobate, then you must litigate!

Send his wife a dozen roses with an unsigned, mushy card attached. Then call his house a couple times either from a pay phone or while blocking your number and hang up when he answers. He'll forget all about your band in a nanosecond...

Yep.

Same thing happened to The Nerve. Drummer cancelled a gig on us. It was not cool to have to tell clubs what was going on, but if I remember correctly we just called the clubs, told them someone was pranking us, and assured that we would NOT be canceling any gigs. Told them to ignore it if anyone called and cancelled. Didn't have to say it was a former drummer, nor tell them any cancellations would be made by us. We never cancelled gigs.

Same guy pulled some other crap first few shows but it got tired for him when we didn't react. He came to our first gig without him and jumped around like a maniac for the whole set right in front of the stage, like he was our biggest fan. It got me going cuz this guy was nuts, what he was doing was totally bizarre, and I wouldn't put anything past him. Didn't know what to expect.

I've never been in a situation like this but I would follow everyone else's advice and let the owner of the venue know that only one person represents the band when booking/cancelling your shows.

A band about ten years ago had a recently fired singer show up right before we got to the venue and try to take our pay in cash. Didn't work, thankfully.

Also had a band member's girlfriend try to cancel our gigs so she could get more alone time, and because she was jealous of the girls in the audience looking at her man.
We sicced OUR girls on her, and they explained ever so sweetly that ANYTHING that takes food off our tables will be "dealt with".
Problem solved--she was too scared to show up at our shows after that.
Eventually he recognized the warning signs and got out of that nightmare relationship.

Does it make me a bad person that I pictured a group of sassy black woman telling her whats up?
