Fan? Or copy-cat?

M'kay, so recently my band has been out of commission to write some new material n get some recordings down. But back when we were playing gigs and me being me of course, had customised my bass to the best of my ability. That being that I had these EXTRA large rubber bands (think dog collar sized) that I put on my bass vertically to go with the neck. I also had some green aurorastrings. Last but not least I had painstakingly made my own knobs out of these cool see-through green dice I bought (no drill so I used a solder gun to melt holes and an Alan-wrench...four hours later I had coolio knobs!)

So yea I felt like the most creative mofo! On a budget. Now all this being September last year. Here's where the fan/copy-cat comes in (pre-band recording break). At my bands first show, his bass at the time is the same model as mine but red and mine is lefty. He's got the ****** cliche stickers all over it thinking he so cool, he rarely ever leaves the first four frets or E string for that matter. I'm not to, "oh look at this guy mehehehehehe" high and mighty bass player at his time but watch.

It's been five months since we've played any show, we've got some recordings and awesome new material! About two months ago me and my guitarist and some friends decide to go to a local show to get away from the recording seriousness and enjoy ourselves. HERE IT COMES. Were there enjoying some music the dudes band is up next, I'm ready to enjoy some more tunes and this SON-OV-A-female dog! Comes out with an explorer bodied bass with masking tape for stripes and black strings. At that point I felt like he stole a part of me.... That was my...thang....

He saw the opening, my band hadn't been out there for a while and he stole my gimmick. Now when we get back out there people will most likely think I'm copying him!!!......feelin kinda butthurt
wat should I do?

Lots of people have instruments that look the same. Although lame that he customized his bass similar to yours. You can either re-customize your bass, or stop worrying about it.

Someone has some self-esteem issues. You sound as paranoid about how your bass looks as I am about how I play on a particular UT2004 server. "That guy's copying my style! OMG!"

Kind of hilarious, actually.

I think I missed the point.

So you put masking tape and rubber bands on your bass, and you're irritated that someone else did the same thing? Or are you pissed that he plays from the 5th fret down? Or huh?

I thought you had green strings, dice-knobs and rubber bands - the other guy uses black strings and tape-stripes.
Doesn't look like he "copied" you - maybe he got inspired by your modding, that's all.
You should rather worry about your playing than who had racing stripes on his bass first....

Paint your bass black, tune C#,F#,B,E and remove all frets past the 5th.
He'll stop copying soon enough.

Don't you think that it is real petty to worry about things like that?
Some masking tape stripes on an explorer style body is what you get all excited about???
REALLY???

Just play well and make that your "gimmick".

Not to sound harsh, but neither of you are the first to do any of those things. Neither of you created the style, but are merely borrowing it.

Id feel "ripped off" too, but I would have forgotten all about it the very next day. Find another gimmick, thats all.

Got to agree with everyone here - it's nothing new. There are probably plenty of people at your school older than you who have done the same/similar things. The bass is considered a good starter instrument, so it's unsurprising that he would have a similar one.

Especially the dice knobs. Thats beyond cliche!

And I would consider moving about the stage more.

And don't call people names just because you don't like how they dress.

Perhaps your new gimmick could be-
every time you play an F# on stage, have your singer kick you in the junk. That would be entertaining as h*!! for the audience, m'kay.

I know that was a long time ago and an audition to something I didn't want to play in the first place
