Favorite Classic Rock Cover Songs to Play

Sign in to disble this ad
Pardon if this topic has been beaten to death, inquiring minds want to know.

I just joined an existing cover band in the SE and we basically play Classic Rock, Outlaw Country and Hard Rock.

From Steppenwolf to Kiss to STP to Hank Jr.

You know, the stuff that you played when you were learning bass.

What is your favorite Classic Rock Cover song or songs?

Mine currently to play is AC/DC (Highway to Hell, TNT and Dirty Deeds). They are simplistic, but are dang fun to play.

Plus its funny to me that the bands (like AC/DC) are now considered classic rock (Thanks Bowling for Soup for the song "1985").

Peace

Z

The guitar line to smoke on the water was the first thing I ever learned to play on bass.

From AC/DC I used to play Sin City and always loved it. God is a Bullet from Concrete Blonde was always a fave...Jailbreak from Thin Lizzy, Mr. Brownstone from Gn'R, Dr. Feelgood from the Crue...the list goes on.

Y'know...it's funny because our band does 1985. And it's a lot of fun to play.

While I was never that big on the song, my vote goes to Brown-eyed Girl, because I get to take a bebop solo over the verse after the first chous, unless it's one of our rockaraoke gigs, which would just throw the vocalist off too much.

Last night, at a rockaraoke gig, we pulled off Lady Gaga's Poker Face...twice. the first time had the room so buzzin' that there were calls for an encore performance. Of course, it helped that the gal doing it was rather hot, and sported Gaga-like eye-makeup.

Now, my current band doesn't do it, but past ones have. I love old Kiss covers, and not the cliched Rock & Roll All Nite, or Cold Gin. I've done Room Service, Let Me Go Rock & Roll (the Alive version) and would love to do Let Me Know. Similarly, one of my old bands did Rush's Bacchus Plateau (the closest thing that they ever did to a drinking song). What I really wanna do is get into a Joe Jackson tribute, since I love a broad range of his stuff.

EDIT: almost forgot, another former band did Tom Sawyer, which always brought down the house as well.

We've recently added a lot of ZZ Top and George Thorogood to our blues lineup. Perked things up and we're having a lot of fun with it. I'm doing the vocals, so I'm having a blast.

One of my bands actually did Lime Light by Rush, now the bass lick is easy once you get the timeing down. The guitarist said it was one of the hardest songs he ever had to learn.

Out of what we play, I'd have to say:
War Pigs
Rock Candy
Used to Love Her

-and going to roll it out at a gig for the first time next week,

Big Bottom

I used to play both of these songs and they are not only fun to play but they also have very cool bass riffs.

I enjoyed playing Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith, in my rock and roll band days of the
80s. The Boys are Back in Town(ThinLizzy), that was fun too. Yankee Rose(David LeeRoth) I will add more as I think of them.

I have a soft spot for 'Still in love with you' - Thin Lizzy again, especially from the 'Live and Dangerous' LP

Dazed and Confused
Whole Lotta Love, which we play with a 6' hot blond woman singer. Blows the crowd's mind.
Sympathy for the Devil and an extended hard version of You Can't Always Get What You Want always get a big reaction, too.
