just curious if anyone else uses stage props?.....either on stage or on your bass rigs?

for me, ...lol...i have this renaissance antique cat doll to sit on top of my rack mount..its a 12'' doll dressed in purple velvet, fake jewels and a glass hand painted cat head/face complete with a velvet musketeer like hat...my wife thinks its extremley creepy...ha!...i played last friday with it and it got alot buzz from people.and my band loves it

the story,...it belonged to my brother...he passed away last june at the age of 28 from an accident...he was a huge cat enthusiast,he would always buy ridiculous cat objects that were weird and funny.....a couple of months after he passed...i finally started going through the boxes of his stuff.....when i found the doll..(still in its box) i started crying because it was so funny and like him......my brother was a huge inspiration in my music, and my best friend...and one of the best drummers i ever knew.....i always wanted to do something to keep his presence on stage with me....the cat doll,is far more than perfect...ill have to post a pics..lol.

anybody else?

wow that's an insanely touching story.

i have no props yet, but i enjoy watching bands that bring props that assist their performance. Such as a band bringing blocks to jump off of etc.

I have a lil Optimus Prime (dubbed Optimus Funk)hanging from my Frankenbass' headstock.

It's gotten quite a few comments so farAlthough, in fairness, the bass itself looks more like a prop than a real instrument haha.

I'm about to get the grillcloth of my SVT-810e painted.

I guess that counts.

Well I don't use props, but a personal fav of mine would be Geddy Lee's use of props (fridges, ovens, etc.) where his amps/cabs would be since he goes direct. Alex Lifeson also has Barbie dolls positioned on his pedal board. Neil Peart doesn't really have any, but Geddy and Alex always bring an action figure of Neil on stage with them.

I've got the head that was ripped off of a stuffed kangaroo at a punk show I was playing a few years back. It fits perfectly over the headstock of one of my basses while it's on it's stand, like a golf club cover

I don't really know if this counts but Morris Day from Morris Day and the Time in between songs will have a roady dressed in a suit come out and hold up a mirror for Morris to look into while he brush's his hair. I've always found that hilarious.

Great story about your brother's cat.

When I was a kid (in the 70s) I had a set of rabbit ear antenna on my amp stack (I was touring before I was 15 - didn't know any better). After the show I'd usually get a question of what they were for.

"Better reception," I would answer.

Bit of of smart-ass (which evolved)

I've had lots of things on display for a night or two, but nothing that I've had for a long time. There's too much stuff on top of my amp that I need, like picks, tuner, cough drops, word sheets, a drink, batteries, etc. I don't need any more clutter!

I did have a small circuit board with 2 flashing lights on it, that I attached to the peghead of my bass with a rubber band. At the time I was in a house band, and I stood at stage left. Just behind my spot was the ladies' room. So any time a choice lady came along, I'd lower the neck, putting the "stop" signal right in her face. "Hold on there, li'l missy!" Quite amusing! Well, to me, anyway! I had that gig for 2 1/2 years...

I used to have a delicate amp head that I would sit on a piece of foam rubber on top of the speaker cab, to absorb vibration. I sometimes wrapped a flashy bandana around the front edge of the "amp pillow", showing flames or a Harley logo or other display. Kind of a prop, I guess.

As for the other kind of props... I generally like a clear stage for action. I've used a lava lamp before (long time ago.)

I saw a ska reggae band (you know, the much more Caribbean sounding ska) and on the stage, they had inflatable palm trees, a chiquita banana girl on stage dancing along with someone in a monkey suit, and another girl that looked like the chiquita banana girl minus the hat. And all the band members had lei necklaces and hawaiian shirts. That was pretty fun.

The one thing I don't understand about that band was the inflatable penis that they threw out into the audience.
