I asked my friend, why is it that whenever a girl can play an instrument, its always bass

Some of the best musicians I know are chicks because they're willing to pour more of their time into their instrument.
I might be young, but I've worked with people nearly 4x my age, and 2 of the best guitarists I know are girls. I also know some pretty hot drummers too ;-)
I only know one chick who played bass. She's my ex-girlfriend and the niece of Jack Cassidy. I love free Hot Tuna shows.

I don't see girls playing one instrument more than another.

what are your thoughts? | That neither of you know what you're talking about. Most female musicians I know play piano, keys and guitar, including some of the women in my family. Gail Ann Dorsey, Lizzy Damont and Rhonda Smith play bass because they're pretty darn good at it and can get paid, just to name a few! As a guy I play it because it's therapeutic for me. There's no gender involved in playing bass, just the desire to play. |

To the OP:
The voice is an instrument for one...
Given females have been musicians in orchestra's and bands long before lumps of wood were being made into electric bass guitars, I think it's safe to take the position that women have proven their ability to master many many more instruments than bass. So no.
I also think you'd benefit from asking yourself the same questions you're asking your friends. I think doing it with a view to finding a reasonably intelligent answer will yield greater results than asking the friend you did.
Gential jealousy? What a laughable concept - everyone knows women can get as many of them as they want anyway...

So for my 31st birthday, my other half got me one for my birthday and I became obsessed with learning it. It is most definately NOT penis envy. I purely love the music and I know a bass chick is a stereotype, but not in this town as it's small. There are NO female bassists and only about 2 guy ones.
I have a mini ego because I get a lot of compliments about how cool and aloof I look when I play! |
