I can dig. Chicks tend not to ask me about the parallels between 2112 and Cygnus Book II.

Sorry but his definition is totally wrong.

Prog is deciding that doing a musical version of the legend of King Arthur ON ICE is a good idea. If you look very carefully you can see punk riding over the hill to save us!!!

YouTube - Rick Wakeman - Sir Lancelot and The Black Knight ( Wembley)

Also featuring ex Bassist magazine columnist Roger Newell playing a crazybonkers Wal triple neck (which I think he then sold to Chris Squire).

If I ever get a time machine the first place I'm going is the meeting when Rick Wakeman first pitched that idea to someone.

That's kind of hilarious. Us prog guys have to be able to laugh at ourselves just like the rest of the world.

Just thought I'd put it out there:
the true definition of prog is rock music that draws it's roots and inspirations more from classical and jazz than traditional rhythm and blues styled playing. This is why there are so many time signature changes, odd formats, and long, complex song arrangements. Prog is also marked by very deep, intellectual and philosophical lyrics (sometimes in the form of fantasy or sci-fi) and conceptual writing conveyed usually in the form of either a multi parted suite with several movements, or an entire album of shorter pieces together telling a sort of modern parable to represent an idea.

hate to be the guy who has to make everything serious, but someone had to post it!

prog (and fusion as well, i suppose):

combining the elitist snobbery of jazz and classical music with the tasteless excess of rock and roll.

"Progressive: although the common belief is that it is music with too many notes, progressive music is actually defined as music which will get you laid less than playing World Of Warcraft would."

LOL

"Progressive rock was what happened in the early 70's when certain brilliant instrumentalists got fed up with playing three-and-a-half minute long songs about teenage love. Unfortunately, this led them to start playing ten-and-a-half minute long songs about nothing in particular."

Do tell what about jazz and classical music is elitist and snobbish. Unless you mean that you have to be a decent musician to play it, I don't follow. I'm not clear on how rock and roll is tasteless either.

I found the rest of the descriptions simultaneously accurate and amusing so please, carry on!

While I loves me some Yes, Rick Wakeman is the poster child for every bad prog rock cliche in existence.

It took me a while to find it on the page... but "Progressive: although the common belief is that it is music with too many notes, progressive music is actually defined as music which will get you laid less than playing World Of Warcraft would." is pretty darned funny.

But incorrect. You just have to hang with the right gals.

chuck klotsermen defined prog as "often expected to bring about new things in the future but almost always are about stuff from the past that never really happned"
