Yup, it happened to me. Fortunately, I was able to put it out quickly, with almost no damage. And while it was probably a freak thing, just in case any of you cats are making the same mistake I was.....
Like many of you, I carry a little "junk" bag full of accessories..... extra batteries, small screwdrivers for on-the-gig repairs, etc. On this particular day, I had, among other things:
- a spare 9V battery (unwrapped)
- a piece of steel wool (which I sometimes use to smooth the back of the neck), and
- a few pieces of scrap paper
Evidently, the 9V battery shifted to a spot near the steel wool; the steel wool was able to short across the terminals, creating a spark.....
The scrap paper was also in immediate proximity, so..... surprise....
Check your gig bags, gang......

Thanks for the tip. I would have never thought about it.

He knew about the danger of oil soaked rags spontatneously combusting so he used ultra fine steel wool to apply oil to furniture (you get a nice warm luster applying it that way also) assuming that was safer. He had not had a fire, so he was reluctant to believe me.

The moderator gives us a list of a few things we each have and tells us we are stranded and have to work as a team to survive.
One of us has a small radio with a 9-volt (of course), and another has some steel wool.
I've heard this so many times it's not funny....
Too bad it happened to you though when you were surviving just fine on your own!
:-)
