Fire in the.... gear bag?

Yup, it happened to me. Fortunately, I was able to put it out quickly, with almost no damage. And while it was probably a freak thing, just in case any of you cats are making the same mistake I was.....

Like many of you, I carry a little "junk" bag full of accessories..... extra batteries, small screwdrivers for on-the-gig repairs, etc. On this particular day, I had, among other things:

- a spare 9V battery (unwrapped)
- a piece of steel wool (which I sometimes use to smooth the back of the neck), and
- a few pieces of scrap paper

Evidently, the 9V battery shifted to a spot near the steel wool; the steel wool was able to short across the terminals, creating a spark.....

The scrap paper was also in immediate proximity, so..... surprise....

Check your gig bags, gang......

My hair spontaneously combusts whenever we cover a Michael Jackson song.

Thanks for the tip. I would have never thought about it.

I've had batteries get very hot when plugging 2 9Vs together. I keep mine wrapped of capped though, so it shouldn't happen to me - I hope!

I probably don't, because I check 'em beforehand (the 'ol tongue test)..... but they are for either an active bass or for the Sansamp.....

Alot of people don't realize how flammable ultra fine steel wool can be. No, it doesn't just heat up, it actually burns. Putting it in combo with a 9-volt is a disaster waiting to happen!

Yeah, I had to argue this with a woodworking buddy. He knew about the danger of oil soaked rags spontatneously combusting so he used ultra fine steel wool to apply oil to furniture (you get a nice warm luster applying it that way also) assuming that was safer. He had not had a fire, so he was reluctant to believe me.

We did an experiment in Physical Science that dealt with burning steel wool. It gets really hot, and when you stop exposing it to fire, it instantly gets back to its normal temperature. It will eventually corrode.

This exact incident is a part of many "group retreat" or "teamwork coaching" excercises many of us corporate weenies are compelled to attend. It is always a part of one of the sessions.
The moderator gives us a list of a few things we each have and tells us we are stranded and have to work as a team to survive.
One of us has a small radio with a 9-volt (of course), and another has some steel wool.
I've heard this so many times it's not funny....
Too bad it happened to you though when you were surviving just fine on your own!
:-)
