First gig in china

Sign in to disble this ad
My high school stage band just got back our china tour a week ago now.
Each venue claimed that they would be able to provide amps (not my decision but ohwell) so we go to our biggest gig yet (about 2000 people) in shanghai and.... they pull out my "bass amp" I used the left speaker of a pa system which was about 30 years old
It farted on every note, we were doing a soundcheck infront of the audience and I literally started laughing in front of the audience when the conductor gave me a tuning note and I hit my low E and FARTT!

check out the 10 watt amp haha

Even cooler was the way they transported it there

ahh well I had fun all the other gigs in china provided fairly good equipment (besides all the writing being in Chinese on the amps lol)

I can't imagine you're the only one. Then again, I can't imagine why he'd have that haircut.

A tour of China while you're in high school, that is awesome. Crappy gear is just something you gotta deal with once in a while, and at least in this band there are lots of people so you're not such a large percentage of the sound.

FWIW the best equipment provided at any gig I've ever played was in Transylvania.

You mean the Stuart Larkin haircut. Justin Bieber copied it from him!

Question: is it true that they seem to like American-made stuff?

Hi.

Congrats on the gig.

The key point with provided gear is to make do with what You're given, regardless of whether that's to your liking or not.

On PA circles, it's way more difficult, especially if the mics are lacking as well as the rest of the rig. Fortunately any sound engineer worth his/her wage, carries at least semi-decent mics along.

You'll find out that a EQ pedal is a valuable tool in making the best of "less than expected" gear.

One other thing to understand, (which You most probably know, you were there) is that the Chinese hosts most probably felt that providing the backline was a honorable thing tho do, not to mention the ease in logistics.

Regards
Sam

I did a gig in China.
The promoter had priced the tickets so no locals could afford to get in and also not promoted it, plus it was in a public park so people could just sit outside anyway and listen without paying.
They gave us handfulls of beer tokens which if you gave 3 together the inexperienced girls serving the bar gave you HALF A PINT of Jamesons for.
I looked on stage and someone was playing a bass on stage that was exactly like mine. It was mine.
No-one got paid.
