First Gig - School Battle of the Bands

Just got back from the first gig with my band. It was just a battle of the bands at my school, but a great deal of fun. I'm exhausted.

The guitar club teacher at my school has been putting this on for 10 years now, and last year I helped with tech set up and all that. Me and my friends decided that we would compete the next year, and although we're no longer in a band (and I was the only one who played) I made it.

Originally, we were going to on 3rd, but the first two bands cancel, so last period I get the call to go see the teacher and he tells me that we need to go first, but get an extended as well.

So, nervous as I've ever been, I get on the stage for the soundcheck, and they tell us to play half a song, so we play "House of Wolves" by My Chemical Romance, the second to last song on the set. Seems to go over great, have to disappoint the audience by stopping when the soundguys tell us to. DJ and rapper do their short set, introduce us, and we plug in.

Then we came straight out to our first original song, an instrumental with a fast guitar part and awesome rhythm (if I say so myself). Everybody's cheering, "Mosh Pit" starts, lots of dancing and all that. Then we do "Prayer of the Refugee" by Rise against, same deal. Pull out our instrumental ballad and we're met with a lighter tribute (cell phones replacing lighters). Then we do our two big covers, "House of Wolves" and "Smells like Teen Spirit" and wrap up with our own heavy original song.

Anyways, we've only been together 4 months, but I was told we were a crowd favorite, we certainly had the biggest crowd reaction (even with most people still arriving), and most bands that went on after us told us it was a great show and they were nervous going on after us.

Alas, it wasn't in the cards and we didn't even place in the top 3. I disagree with that choice because we had the biggest crowd movement and during the "Cheer Off" segment, our fans held their cheer for the longest. Either way (other than winning) I don't think I could've asked for a better first gig. Many of the bands we played with were veteran bands in the area who have been together for years (some are touring a couple states this summer, and one's played as far North as New York) so with the exception of a few, it was a really tight show.

I paid a cameraman friend of mine to record the show with his HD camera (1080i!) and he's going to give me the DVD on Monday, so I'll upload to YouTube for all to see.

That's way cool! Congrats on that gig going well. Use that momentum to play out at some parties etc. Great things could come from this. =)

Very cool! Keep going with this and enjoy it. You play live not for the judge in the back holding up a numbered sign, but for the reaction of the crowd. The crowd is the REAL judge, and the crowd is what will make club owners happy to see you.

I got the video. I think I figured out what the problem was. Vocals were so quiet in the monitors that I didn't even hear half the things my singer said when we weren't playing. Needless to say, when we were, the singer couldn't hear a thing she sang, so she was about 3 steps flat for almost the entire show. It really sounds bad. But I didn't want you to think that was normal when I uploaded it. haha
