First Gig in Thirty Years

Sign in to disble this ad
I just gotta share. I played in several bands back in the day, then put it down. Early this year, the juices stared flowing again. It had been thirty years since I played. Jammed with some Craigslist folks with mixed results. Found a band I liked. Good drummer. Good singer. Competent guitarist. They had been having trouble with bass players. Then.....the bassist they had lined up for Saturday night crapped out on them. On Tuesday. I began to prepare, and to convince them I could do it. Learned 42 songs, or at least made myself capable of muddling through them with a minimum of mistakes.

I feel really good. Musical thinking patterns are mentally VERY challenging, even if you once knew them fairly well. It has been a struggle to fight back to my old level of proficiency. But now a goal has been achieved. I'm a gigging bass player again. Woohoo!

Also, my hats off to you for learning 42 songs in a week. That had to be strenuous. I'd imagine your playing benefited from it though!

I had the same problem. I quit for over 10 years due to among other things, a bad case of carpel tunnel. My brother got tired of having no one to jam with, so he got me a bass as I had sold all my stuff years earlier when I quit. Took me about 3 months of practice to be able to do anything at all with any level of skill. Its now been 3 years. Thru alot of patience and changing my posture, hand position, strap length, finger and picking styles, I can play thru a whole night without serious pain issues. Hopefully I will be able to continue this for some years to come without any serious flare ups. I really missed it alot, and my life was very empty without music. Im glad to be back as well.

Congrats! I went through a similar thing, laying off beginning in 1973, recovering my bass gear in 1997 and doing my first gig about 2001. Feels great, dunnit??

Best wishes to your brother, I did the 10 year hiatus..kids etc. Now, I have a great singing girlfriend, who inspires me to play better. We've been gigging together for less than a year and I am twice the player I was when I sold my 1996 purple Carvin LB ebony neck beast. back in the 90's I played in a lot of bands....now...this band is good, and I am having the best of times.

Even with loading half the PA equipment into my SUV. Loving life.
