And I loved it!!! Love it so much better to inside gigs, more freedom, and the open air is just amazing :P
Obviously there were many issues, such as we had no moniters So we couldn't hear any vocals but we managed just fine.
The set was a mix of originals and covers http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2123374_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._3014788_n.jpg
Oh, the gig was an art expedition at my college
Mark
P.s. I'd use photo bucket for pictures but it won't let me do anything without filling in a survey which I really don't want to do -.-

However, last weekend's outdoor gig in 30MPH winds (reading sheet music, no less) was no picnic.

It's a summer annual thing called "Arts In The Park" and they do a combination of local talent and the city band. Had professionals running sound, could hear the mix the way I wanted it through MY monitor (not how the soundguy wants it through MY monitor) and everything was great. Nothing like professionals to make your job easier (and more fun!) |

But coincidentally, the four of us in our band just decided that Saturday (outdoor party) was our last outdoor summer gig. The heat index was 110 degrees here in Memphis.
Wouldn't have been quite as bad if we could have just plugged in and played; but unloading/setting up all our equipment was brutal. Fall gigs yes. Summer? Doubtful. For 5 or 6 months here it's always close to 100 with killer humidity...

On that note, I'd like to chime in about insect repellent. It is super nasty stuff on finished surfaces. I always hose myself down with deepwoods off before playing an out door gig, but take particular care to wash my hands completely clean.
Don't get that crap on your bass!

Gonna be hot as hell and I'm going to have to give 200% for two hours... (Opening for the KISS army tribute band and those guys give one hell of a show so I'm going to have to really bust my ass to give them fired up crowd...)
Beats the pants off of a dark, smokey, room no matter what the temperature is.
Playing outdoors just feels better...

Up here where I live our window for outdoor gigs only runs from about mid-June to the end of September. In fact we had to cancel an outdoor gig last year cause it was only 45 degrees (F) and raining -- and this was the 1st weekend of June! And anytime between about the 4th of July and Labor Day near-tropical heat and humidity is possible. So I don't do a lot of playing outdoors... but when the weather's nice and the sound is good, there's nothing better. I especially enjoy not having to deal with a smoky room.

Don't get that crap on your bass! | And yet you'll drown yourself in it?
I hate that stuff. The smell, the feel, the taste, yech!
The trick is.... don't bathe. Contrary to popular belief, you can in fact gag a maggot. |

I HATE the sprays. Reminds me of way back when we practiced above a dairy barn with dozens of flys landing on us... we used to twitch and jump around a lot.

We have 2 coming up next month, one a regular yearly gig the week after the 4th of July, and the following week we're playing a new (for us) place up on Lake Erie. I like the fact that outdoors you don't have weird room acoustics messing with the sound, and you can usually hear yourself better. We always have small fans that help keep the bugs off, and keep air moving to overcome the heat and humidity.
