First show with the new band tonight. (Cola. S.C.)

So my new little rock and roll outfit is playing our first show tonight. I don't know if you'd really call it a 'show', but a round in a local original band competition at Jillian's.

I don't know what it is...but I have a case of the nerves! I've played 100s of shows, but this is the first time I can remember being this anxious over it. I've been like this for days now.

I know I'm ready to play it, I know the rest of the guys are ready, but I can't shake the butterflies.

Now, I've had 'em before, and I know all will be well once I start setting up my gear and warming up....but jeez, I couldn't imagine dealing with this feeling before every outing...I'd be a complete mess.

I wonder if it's because it's a competition? Granted, I think we are good enough to win the round...but we are going up against more acoustic oriented college-rock acts in a college town and we're an ear-splitting heavy rock show beast...thingie.

It ought to be interesting to say the least.

Anyways...if you're local to Columbia SC and have no prior plans, come see us kick off our first public performance!

Well, either you're going to win or you're not. So let it go and just play the gig.

Yep. It's completely out of our hands, so we'll just go do what we do.

Funny you say that, as I've been saying that to my mates all week...and now I'm the one with the jitters.

I honestly think it's more that it's a whole new sound for the individual members of the band (we have such varied tastes)...and we're a bit unlike anyone else locally...so I'm really curious on how it will be received.

It was a bit of a horror show.

Very bad stage sound, not that it's unexpected being a gear up and go thing, so we had a super hard time hearing anything but the drummer and I. Very loose playing overall.

Strap locks popping out...never have I had a lock pop out, but the thing went twice, so I spent the majority of two songs playing 'Crouching Bassist, Hidden Anger'...grrrrrr. That really took the fun out of it for me.

All that said, we made it through the round and get to play another free show in a month. (Wheeee?)

We're glad we moved forward, and had the chance to finally play the material in public..but slightly frustrated because we know we can and have played much much better.

Lessons learned:

-Be a bit more demanding on our stage mix...if we have to take an extra couple of minutes to do it right, so be it. The sound guy may be in a rush, but also seems to be accommodating.

-Check my strap locks to insure they're working as intended

-Keep me from drinking so much dang coffee the afternoon before a show. I might not be as wound up.

Dunlops.

The problem lies with the 'stem' on the strap portion...the outer ring has fallen off so that it's not fitting snug enough in the hole. With any tension on it, it just pulls past the bearings and cuts loose.

I have another set around that I need to find and insure that it doesn't happen again.
