First Time Gigging!!!

AAAHHHH!! This is my first time gigging, my dad got me a playing spot with a local jazz band in louisville. got any tips???

Don't Panic.

If you get lost
1 play quieter but still with confidence.
2 get down on the E (or B if you have one), it's more difficult to tell what low notes are.
3 play short notes, more difficult to identify.

Don't forget that you will be the one listening the most to you.

Relax.

Good advice, but if it's jazz, maybe he should lay on the F instead of the E. Horn keys n' all.

No advice from me, except have fun and hit the one! Don't beat yourself up when you make a mistake. It happens to everyone.

Don't grimace over the clankers! Facial expressions like that just confirm what the audience just might be thinking. It also makes it appear that you're not enjoying yourself. Smile, nod, make occasional eye contact with the audience, that way they know you want to be there. Remember, unless you're playing in a prison, they WANT to be there! Show them that you do, too!

I know its going to be hard to relax because this is your first gig. Have fun. Everyone makes mistakes, the trick is to not let it derail you. If you find yourself lost, hang onto the root until find your spot, then jump back in. I play in a prog rock band and when we are in some crazy odd time jam and I loose my place, I always look at the drummer. He will give me a nod and really accent the 1 on the next measure to help me find myway back.

Don't forget your backup bass!!! (I have experienced this unfortunatelyO__o) And As long as you stay on beat and play notes in the most common chord, nobody will notice if you're lost. And mix it up! Play up the neck once in a while! A bunch of low notes get boring :P Just make sure to play the right notes if you're going very high...

But most importantly, HAVE FUN and wear some good deodorant!!!

Can't stress this enough. If you flub a note or three, just shrug it off and smile - you and maybe your bandmates are probably the only ones that notice anyway. Getting frustrated over a wrong note will only make it worse.
And yes, HAVE FUN! That's the most important thing.

I meant E or B string, I should have made it clearer.
