First time "playing out"

Today in two hours will be my first time actually playing in front of an audience. A fellow teacher and I are doing a two man show for a retirement party. I am only slightly nervous now. I have sung in front of thousands, but this is my first time playing the bass in this setting. The good news is that we do a simple grouping of songs, and it works alright with my using just basic music theory to play around the chords. Not too many actual bass lines to memorize.

Here goes nothing.

Listen to the Who before going on stage. You will want to break stage, which makes you fearless.

Whew!! What a blast. It may have only been a small party (40 teachers on a Friday afternoon), but I had the time of my life. I was about as relaxed as I could have been. We had tons of fun, people clapped and screamed. I sang lead on 3 songs, if you count singing Prince's "Kiss". I only fumbled a few times (mostly when singing lead). I could get used to this kind of thing. Now I need my skills to increase.

Our set-up was the ring-leader/lead singer/rhythm gutarist/physics teacher Lou Carusone, the amazing Glen Cummings on lead guitar (played in the 80's for Cabo Frio, look it up) sounding amazing even though he never played with us once, and myself on bass. No drummer, so I really had to be sure to keep the sound coming. My fingers aren't too sore. More practice in my future.

Oh, did I mention that Lou and I sang "Islands in the Stream" as a duet. I think I was Dolly. People said it was good, and creepy. We laughed.
