Freak Pre-Sound Check Injury

Sign in to disble this ad
So we had a hospital medical staff party gig last night at an exclusive country club. I came to the gig in my work clothes and after setting up (just before the sound check) I go to the men's room to wash up and change into gig attire. All I can say is in these country clubs I thank God for the handicap stalls. It's like your own personal green room. They are always clean, large, and usually smell free because you're in there before anyone else and they have their own sink. It just needs a bench to make it perfect.

So I finish cleaning up, change my clothes and I go to grab my clothes on the floor. My left ring finger gets cut on a piece of broken (and sharp) tile on the wall. It starts bleeding like I'm a stuck pig and the cut is right where I place the finger on the strings. It's 1/4" (that's about 6mm for you Brits) long and it's deep. I get a few bandaids from one of the servers, but it starts bleeding through during the sound check. I clean up the blood on my hand and my bass and ask for Crazy Glue. Nobody had any, but I got some duct tape and applied it. After a couple of tries, I get the right combinations of layers and wraps of the tape and was able to play all night with it.

I'm healing fine now, but I glued it together with crazy glue. I hope it's good for my gig tomorrow night.

So what are your pre/ peri/ or post gig injuries? Break your back loading in? Slip and fall off the stage (like the other thread)? Head banged by another's headstock? Drum stick mistakenly slipping out of the drummers hand poking you in the head? What scars do you have?

Our guitarist ties his cab into the van using a couple of bungee cords (the sort with hooks on the end). For those that get the analogy - they're known by that rest of the band as "arkrights till"... Unhooking them is easy, but letting go without loosing a finger is a real trick!

I tried it once and got a painfull cut - fortunatly not to deep, and it had stopped bleeding by the time we started the gig, but now I wait for the guitarist to get is gear OUT of the van before I help him in with it.

I cut my middle finger on my right hand with an X-acto knife at work. I have a gig in 1.5 hours. I just got back from sound check and it kind of hurts to play, but I'm afraid it will start bleeding again. There's nothing I can do I guess.

Let's see. Moving a Hammond B3 from the back of a truck onto a loading dock and one of my legs slipped in between the lift.

Setting up lights. Turned around and walked into a lowered power winch. Right in the shin. Almost pooped my pants it hurt so bad.

Had a VT stack topple and my leg was clipped by the horn. Probably should have had stitches

Setting up a stage at a county fair and had the web of my hand pinched in an iron brace.

Rolling bass cab out onto a slatted porch. Castors caught in between slats and cab came to an immediate stop. I didn't - ended up going over the top. More embarrassed than injured

I've never hurt myself playing bass, but I play drums too. I once took a hell of a tumble off the back of an unusually small riser.

My ego was hurt more than my body, man did I look like an idiot......

2 hours before church, I'm in a hurry fising dinner for the family, slicing an onion (hint in a hurry, using a sharp knife) sliced the end of my first finger on the left hand!! After some super glue, durabond and bandaids Iw as able to play but it bled through before mass was over.

I now have a steel/fabric mesh filet glove am not allowed to do any slicing and dicing without it!!

While carrying a cab through a doorway, I smashed my right hand into the part of the doorframe where the slanted metal is. Sliced hand open pretty bad. After the gig, I was in an incredible anoumt of pain, and it took a while to heal, as well.

not pre sound check (gig was a week away)...

with 3 more lined up before christmas....

was cutting skirting board for my house with a hand saw which jumped. Sawed into my pointing finger on my left (fretting hand) about 1/3 the way INTO the first joint.

2 nights hospital and some plastic surgery to connect the nerve and artery (and to clean out wood shards)

AM hoping to be ready to play for the gig next week!

I had a real bad day at work once.... I going a welder-school

injured my right middle finger 2 times the same day.... and we had a upcoming gig that weekend.

Well first i was assigned to cut 6mm thick scrapmetal.... and my gloves hade shrunk due to the heat from the weldingmachine. Took the right of to get a piece up from this box and the sharp edge tore into the top of my finger. Ouch,

Right the same day i'm sharpening the electrode (for those who knows about TIG welding, you often have to sharpen the electrode). Anyway, sharpening and the grindwheel had a big chunk missing... hard to see when it's spinning.... The electrode breaks, is thrown around and right into the same finger I cut myself in. And pretty deep too...

So that gig was really interesting, my brother kept yelling at me to be more careful at school ^^

1. Cut open my hand at the base of my right hand index finger while framing a diploma about four hours before leaving for the first gig of a five-show weekend. I needed four stitches and had to play all weekend with a bandage.

2. Smashed my head getting offstage at the Elbo Room. Blacked out for a minute. That sucked.

3. Hospitalized with food poisoning the night before a busy weekend of gigs. Do you know how painful it is to play when your right arm has had an IV in it for 7 hours? This was the absolute worst...I've never NOT wanted to play so badly in my entire life. Went home and didn't get out of bed for four days.

wow, so many of you use super glue to heal your wounds...

is it really that great?

anyway, I was building a new computer and i was just removing metal guards that, for some reason, are in the expansion bay slots when you buy a new case. Anyway, I removed 2 without any hassle, on the third, my thumb slipped caught on the corner of the sharp bit of metal, slid the whole length of the guard. I could see my bone. couldnt play bass for about a week. One of the most painful things ever.

WOW I hope you're alright...
I hope you don't make your living playing

The worst I've had was pushing my cab fast and gliding on it...(you know, like shopping carts...) except on a tile floor...it stops, i don't...
damaged pride is all...

Super Glue was used on wounds in the 60's, and no it was not originally invented for wounds...myth.
Night before the show, during an intense and lengthy practice I tore all three callouses on my picking hand. Didn't use a pick for the show, could have swore the crowd could see my tears.
