This happened to me, and I thought I had a free bass. This is just how they process your order. Make sure you keep enough money in your bank account for when everything catches up.

They'll have record of you, or someone you know, taking delivery of the bass if it arrives. If the bass has not been paid for and they show that you're in possession of it you may be in for some trouble.

Companies keep regular inventories and balance it out with their sales. For something worth that amount of $ you can rest assured that when they discover that they're missing it, they'll figure out where it went. Thru. a label system containing RFID tags At that point, if you still have the product, they can legally charge you for it since you still have it in your possession (even if the error was on their end). It may feel like a blessing from the heavens when you get on the good end of mistakes like this. Another far reaching possibility is that this company may be disreputable and do this with intent hoping that you will use the equipment then not accept the return essentially forcing you to purchase it, but lean to the side of giving them the benefit of the doubt. But be sure not to use the bass, and send it back as soon as you can! Most of these companies have bigger pockets than we do and their legal team will make quick work of you if you keep it without paying for it. Call them tell them to send you a return label and send it back.

Unfortunately for the online website, that isn't true. I used to work for a large internet retailer and I remember an instance where we shipped someone a more expensive item than the one they ordered. We couldn't just charge them for the more expensive item, even though they were in possession of it. We had to call them up and explain what happened and fortunately they were kind enough to return the item with our provided shipping label.

The same thing in this case, if the customer canceled his order and through the shippers error, still receives the item, the company can't just flat out charge him for it. Unless the customer gives consent to charge them for something, they can't. Period.

Now that's not saying they don't have any recourse they can take, but for a few hundred dollars, depending on the retailer it probably isn't even worth it to go through the legal hassle to get reimbursed.

Now if it were me who received the free bass, I'd probably have a hard time keeping it. It wouldn't stop me from asking for a free set of strings or something for returning it though

Something similar on a smaller scale happened to a friend of mine. Just for giggles he ordered a little (read: cheap) battery powered micro amp. Musician's Friend sent him six of them on accident, neatly packed into the same box. He kept them, nobody said anything, he sold them off to his friends for like $10-15 hahaha.

Unsolicited Mail

There is a US Postal Reg about unsolicited mail becomes the property of the recipient.
So, if you have cancelled, the item is now an unsolicited shipment, and the when it arrives, it is yours.

You may be a great bassist, but you're for sure a lousy barrister.

And just what does the US Mail have to do with this anyway? Who do you know that MAILS basses?

Don't kid youself. In no way does this fall under the catagory of unsolicited merchandise. It was most certainly solicited (ordered), it was simply cancelled later.
Just because the seller mistakenly ships it anyway doesn't mean it going to be free to keep.

There are several ways this can pan out. It depends on the attitude of the seller and mood of the assigned Assistant United States Attorney. Or didn't anyone consider that this is most likely an interstate shipment?

In my not so humble opinion, if the OP keeps it without paying this constitutes, at least on a purely moral level, thievery, plain and simple. And most likely felony thievery at that.

And based on the posts so far, I am ashamed of some of you.

I'm ashamed of you for using blue font, it doesn't add any extra veracity to your post, if at least you had chosen a manly color like pink or purple, but blue,

The computer in the sky is still thinking...

When I bought my first computer in 1983, it took the retailer (and American Express) nearly six weeks to get an statement in my hand after arriving home with the computer. And, there was no lag in the CC due date, it was basically due within a few days of my received the bill.
