Yep, it happened. As we closed out our performance, someone shouted out those most infamous words. We kinda chuckled a bit and then the singer launched into the first verse. Now I've never played the song on my life, so I spent the first verse following the guitarist. It came slowly came together after that and while the trademark Leon Wilkinson fills were missing, we managed to pull off something that sounded like Freebird. At least the crowd was happy....

| | | | About a month ago we had a retirement party gig and out of nowhere came that infamous shout...FFFFRRRREEEBBBBIIIIRRRRRDDDDD.......I looked at who it was, and it was a friend of mine (and TB member) from another band and he was laughing his *** off. TB humor can be really irritating! |

"Here you go, no charge!!!"
...then go on as if it never happened.

...then go on as if it never happened. | Me and my guitar player will stop what we're doing , look at each other and start talking excitedly about the guys in the audience that have the reefer. We usually ask them to wait until we're done with the set, but they never actually seem to be holding.........

We are a blues band, but will play anything on a slow night, especially if the owner is there,as he loves to hear us wreck Van Halen,Black Sabbath, etc.
Sure enough ,last Tuesday,Freebird came out.The bonus to the whole thing was after about four minutes of the solo,I started playing the bass part to "Wipeout".
So,if you're ever in Houston on a Tuesday night and want to hear a bad Freebird/Wipeout medley..........

Walked out of the bathroom and one of the guys was warming up/noodling around on the piano. I called out Freebird, and without missing a beat he flips me off & keeps getting it.
Instant $10 in the tip jar!!!

All the Brown Eyed Girls, Free Birds etc etc. My first gig was as a sub, I showed up at the gig a few hours after a phone call. I about hid in shame when they broke into Free Bird as a part of the set. Everyone in the club got up to dance slow in the first part and bad 'Deadhead' moves on the solos. The audience loved the band for that.
The shame is I remember hearing the song for the first time, in context, when it was first released, a great song. I never want to hear it again, of play it. But I understand how one wants to hear it. And if it's a joke call for the song, everyone in the bar will kick the guys butt if you play it.

Amazing how much deterrent value that has, since mose wisecrackers get the deer in the headlights look at our response. Some have taken us up on it, and one dude was pressured by his pals into coming up, but clearly did not want to, so he did the next best thing by slipping a 20 into our tip jar. He recieved instant absolution. Our mercy can be bought.

The fact I was at a Skynyrd gig helped.

| | | | My band opened for country singer Andy Griggs back on the fourth of July, and during his show, someone hollered "Freeeeeebirrrd". He said, "well, maybe you shoulda been here for the opening band." The guy replied that he had been, and Andy said "well, maybe they should have let them play a little longer then", and the guy agreed with him!
I thought it was pretty funny, since they cut our set by about 4 songs.

Or turn it into a polka. |
