I am selling my American made P bass, Ash/Maple. I dropped the price to 695. I get an email from some dude stating i'd be lucky to get 200-300 for it. He said if he was patient, he could get one for no more than 300. I simply told him to call any music store in the country and ask if they have a used MIA for that price...

Could have told him to be patient then, very patient.

You aren't the only one to get a response like that. I had a guy trying to sell him my amp for 50% of my selling price. I told him no and he said fine that he could find them on Ebay for less. So I told him good luck and God Bless.

On the topic of replies, I posted an ad stating that I was looking for a metal band, personal influences include Sean Malone, John Myung, Steve Harris, guys like that. I get a guy who emails me back saying that if I took bass playing seriously, I would develop an original style like Flea did.

I posted an ad looking for a female vocalist for a metal band. Specifically stated "female (not male)" and got mostly responses from guys. Impressive given the shortage of male vocalists around here. I resisted the temptation to send clever replies, though.

Well i'm one of those guys that cannot shut my mouth when i see someone selling something way overpriced. I'd never say it publicly but only to the person pr. mail or phone. Ex. the other day i saw an ad for a used TC Electronic 1140 eq/preamp. He asked for about $500. Normally these goes for around $200 to $250 around here. So i fell like i had to tell him that. No need for him to go around thinking no-one is interested in his preamp when the only problem is that it is overpriced.
I got a mail back saying thanks! But i also said to him that it wasn't because i wanted to lowball him as i already have a 1140 myself.
For those who looks at my for sale ads here thinking "he's really overpriced these basses" remember that i am in Europe! Everything here is much more expensive, mostly american stuff. Right now we are kind of happy for the weak dollar!
When i bought my Musicman SR5 the retail price in Denmark was around $3800, now it is around $2800! So i bought a lot of stuff lately from the US!

I have a boat in my yard with a 4 sale sign on it and some guy called and asked if I would take payments because he would have to buy a truck to tow it home....I think not.

I tell people I'm willing to accept payments one at a time and for the full asking price until paid off.

I've politely let sellers know when their price is too high, usually when it's obvious that they've made an honest error when deciding on an asking price, i.e., they're selling a Mexi-P for the price of an American one. In your case, this guy was either clueless, or he was hoping you'd be like, "Oh, really? Dah... that's all it's worth? Okay, then. You can have it for $200." As long as you know your stuff, you have nothing to worry about from such people. They're a minor annoyance at best. Like gnats.

I posted here a while back about a guy on Craigslist trying to sell a entry level Ibanez bass for $1400 and a Behringer combo amp for $400! I e-mailed him back and his wife/girlfriend responded with a barrage of insults. I replied with links to Musiciansfriend ads for both products (totaling $300+/-)! She insisted her husband/boyfriend paid that much for them in NC somewhere and had the receipts to prove it! Called me a liar! I responded that her husband/boyfriend got jacked if he spent that much for those items!! Insane! Funny, I never got any replies from the husband/boyfriend!!

At the same time, I kept flagging the ads for removal. The bass ad was back up the next day for $800! LOL! I kept flagging all their ads until they stopped posting!

Yeah, those guys who sell for wwaayy too much kill me...

I may have overpriced an item or two, but I've been called out on it. And I usually don't reply to a Craigslist posting unless I can afford to pay the full price, either. Lowballing people is just wrong, IMO... even if it does work from time to time.

I just try to get a reasonable price.

Hi.

I'm thinking that You guys see those a-holes as a challenge rather than an opportunity that they are.

Every time any-one tries that "I can get that with a fraction of the price from the place X" line with me when dealing MI gear, motorcycles, machining equipment, etc., my reply is always "Yeah, doesn't sound bad so let's make a deal, tell me where to pick up one, or two, or a dozen of those items and I'll pay You CASH". Quite a few times I've even thrown a little extra for their efforts.

NOT ONCE in my 20 or so years dealin' with those kind of persons have I had to actually buy anything from them.

I was tempted though when one opportunist tried to convince me that a brand new 4500€ SRP milling machine can be had for 300€ and 5000€ lathe for 400€.
Unfortunately he lived rather far away from me so I couldn't pay him a visit. Ordered 10 each of those machines though and he had a hell of a time trying to back out . He would've made 50€ each, not bad methinks.

Regards
Sam

I bought my 78 P-Bass for 250 bucks but that was back in 92 when 70's Fender's
weren't getting any love. If he can find an MIA Fender Bass for 300 bucks these days
it's most likely being sold by the meth head who stole it.
