The first show I ever played bass at, I was rocking a rogue 5 string bass into a rogue 120 watt 1X15 combo amp. It was a small punk show, where the bass player for the headlining band had a 60 watt 1X12 combo, but when he saw mine he said something to the effect of "dude, your amp kicks mine's ass...can I play the show with it?" Me and him still hang out every once in a while, and every time I upgrade my equipment, he wants to buy my old stuff from me.

I remember at my first band practice ever, I didn't know where any of the notes were on the bass. My keyboardist told me to hit a c and and a g (repetitive eigth notes, which was all I could handle) and him eventually having to tell me which frets to hit. Good guy.

Also discovering where the octaves were was a gigantic revelation to me.

Both actually, but another bass will help you avoid electronics issues that you often can't fix as quickly as a snapped string...
...but good point, yes!

I've picked up a few gigs following endorsements from an aquaintance of mine as he has moved on to different bands. One of the stories he told me was a bit cruel, but funny...

He was gigging in Belfast where he was bought up, went up to the bar during a break and was immediately surrounded by really good looking women. "Hey pal, you're the bass player in the band aren't you" said one of the girls as they all crowded round him, of course he immediately thought he was onto a good thing "Aye, I am, what do you think of it" he said....

They all chorused "Oh, we think yer SHITE"

The first time I changed strings on my bass. I took them all off, and then put the G string on, and freaked out because the string was resting on the frets......i thought i had broken my bass....
