Actually one time I tuned to sweet emotion, learned the bass riff... then my band was like, "We know this song! We should play it!" Then they played it completely wrong! I should know, I just got finished playing with Aerosmith.

Oh crap- that was a G? No wonder my bass sounded out of tune, I thought it was an E...

I have a great memory when it comes to music; play me a song and I'll memorize it perfectly and I can replay it in my mind. So, I can tune my E string to Comfortably numb (after the intro, it goes B-B-B-A-A-G-F#-E) and I'll just use my E string to tune every other string.

I just nail the 12th fret harmonic... somehow I can just tell when my bass is out. I've compared it to a couple of electric tuners and it'd only be out likea cent or something every time. Dunno why, never practiced it or anything, and I'm most certain that I don't have perfect pitch .

Sounds like a good reason to have a small backup tuner in your gig case.

But when it was time to play the next song, I was out of tune again.

After tuning the bass a couple of times I noticed the tuner was set to A 445. I guess it must have been altered when the tuner was being thrown around in the case.

Luckily I got it all together in time to play the last song in tune.
Has happened to me too, irritating.

Tuning related story...

Years ago, I had been back home on vacation and decided (finally) to lash out and buy a bass guitar and I bought a 4 string.

Several months later, I was back in Saudi Arabia when me and a couple of mates went into one of the music shops in town. They had there, a 5 string Fender and one of my mates said I should have a go. I asked the shop guy if I could have a play and he said yes.

After plunking a couple of notes I realised it was way out of tune but then I was stumped as I was not sure which was the "extra" string in regards to a 4 string. It wasn't obvious as I had some humungous strings on my own 4 string while the ones on the Fender 5 were quite a bit lighter - accordingly, the B string on the 5 seemed about the same gauge as the E on my 4.

I asked the shop guy whether it was a bottom B or a top C that was different from my 4 and he assured me it was tuned E A D G C!!!

He was then kind enough to plug in a 6 string and wallop the E string for me to tune up on. As I started cranking up the "E" string, the neck started to give a bit of a groan and when I looked up at the guy, he said it was just "bedding in".

I got the "E" string sorted and moved to "A" and as I wound that up, the neck really started to complain but "it's just bedding in" I thought, while the shop guy gave me a "cmon cmon" hand motion. I finally got it tuned and moved to the "D" string, which of course was actually the A string. As I brought it up to pitch, the whole thing was really groaning and complaining and just when I was nearly on pitch, the string broke!

As it was plugged into an amp at the time, it made one HELLUVA bang and the string flew past my face at (it seemed like it anyway) the speed of sound and the guitar jumped in my hands whilst creaking and groaning very loudly! A nice bit of feedback had also started.

Needless to say, I near $hit myself, as did my mates and the shop guy. I handed the guitar back to him and he asked if I wanted to buy it?!?!?! My reply was something like "no thanks mate, it's broken"!!!

I've never been back to that shop...

Wow, the shop guy must've known very little about basses. Should've been able to tell whether it was a low B or high C 5-stringer from the string gauge.
