You want critical acclaim, join a jazz band. Rock and Roll is in fact a euphamism for sex, so joining a rock band to get girls is not only a time honored practice - it's a logical extension of the genre.
What about prog rock?

Will you get chicks as a bassist? Well, on our last gig, I had a girl tell me just how much she liked my bibs, another girl give me her phone number, a pair of girls come up to me and pretty much demand that I come hot-tubbing with them, and one girl asked flat out if I wanted to just go do the deed. The homeliest of these ladies was maybe a 6.5 on the wood-o-meter.

'nuff said.

Just an observation but, I have met a few ladies by playin in bands. It seems they were attracted to the "quiet confidence" of the bass player. Any girl worth dating can see through the obvious needy narcissism of singers and lead guitarists. Bass player just hangin' back, keepin' a steady rythym, aggressively playing, occassionally steppin' up and flashing some brilliance. Seems they like that. Not to mention the competition factor of many girls tryin for the singer or guitarist. Bassist may be an easier target.
But what it really is, is that being the "entertainment" for the evening gives you street credibility. People kinda "know" you now. You're not just some speck on the wall. And if you smile and remain approachable, chances go up.
Bottom line, seems that women will focus on the best looking guy in the band. And that usually isn't me

don't rely on a band to get girls. i've played so many shows that i can't remember some of them, and only at the end of my last one did i get girls coming up to us and asking for our autographs. that being said, in a way none of my bandmates or me have even gotten close to getting chicks, especially when i realized the high amount of sarcasm (and giggling) coming from them.

edit: "them" meaning the girls at the last show.
