Wink Getting a live version to learn a song from - not so good.

So I'm doing a gig with a cover band that does mostly Jerry Garcia stuff. I'm a closet deadhead so it's all good. The leader has a rotating cast for every other chair so you always get to play with someone new.

But that's not the point. For tonight's gig we have a get together to go over new material he's added. Most of them I've never heard. He tells me the chords and form and then i follow along while we run through them.

"Hey dude, can i get some Mp3s of those new tunes so i can get the feel and form down?" - "Sure thing Man."

Well. My bad for not specifying studio cuts. I get some 18 minute live performances where I'm pretty sure everyone is on crack. Try learning a tune where nobody plays the "one" or the fundamental of any given chord. During any given transition at least one player forgets where in the song they are.

Good thing i made these cheat sheets during rehearsal.

O.K. and you are surprised by this? Did you ever actually see the dead live? feel good that you know what key the song is supposed to be in, and I would not count on that either. This is the dead after all. Good luck.

30 plus times thanks

yeah, i should have known better. I just didn't think they'd actually give me one of the wackier live versions to learn the song from.

LOL! And your bandleader will say "we do it just like that!"

I tried to learn "Train Train" by Blackfoot from a live album. Yikes! Lot of weird different parts, lot of working the crowd, "lemme hear ya London!!!" etc. I finally had to get the studio album, couldn't believe how much easier it was!
