You wouldn't happen to be playing for the Good Ol Blues Brothers Boys Band, would you? | "My brothers in the car filling out an American Express Travelers Cheque to cover the extensive bar tab" |

We usually get the door during the time we play. This was always our agreement. This time, there was a slight change in policy, but it should not have cost us much. When we went to get paid though, they were going to give us $10 (each)! We wouldn't accept that! It seems when people came up to pay, they were asked if they were here to see the band. If so, the money went to us. If they said "no", the bar kept the money!
After much discussion, the bar owner (not the person in charge of the door) decided to give us some extra $$, and then also gave us a stack of gift certificates. By this point we had already paid our bar tab though. In total, we got "paid" more than we usually would for that place - but in actual cash it was almost half of what we'd normally take in.
Next time we play there, we will use the gift certs to have free dinner & drinks for us and our families. Luckily this is just a hobby for us, and we don't rely on the cash for anything!

| Seeing the band and hearing the band are two different things.
I hope everyone heard the band.
That's just another way for the bar owner to stiff the musicians. Getting paid "the door" is "the door". None of this question asking BS.
Basically, you'd have to bring all of your friends, do your own advertising, etc. to make any money. Getting paid $15 is ridiculous.
Isn't the cover charge supposed to be for the live music? If the people that said they weren't there to see the band, then they shouldn't have paid anything to get in since having a band didnt' matter to them. |

If you bought that nonsense about people being asked if they were there to see the band or not you are easily fooled. It really makes no difference to me that you are a hobbyist. You obviously think the gift certificate thing is wrong otherwise you wouldn't have started this thread.
As for playing at the bar next time, I would make sure that next time you have a proper agreement with the venue for a realistic fee in cash. By all means cash in those drinks vouchers, but make sure you get paid. Personally there wouldn't be a next time for me.
Let me put it to you another way too. It's all very nice that you don't care that you had your pants pulled down and spanked here, and it's all very nice that the money isn't an issue for you, but what you are also doing is supporting the venue's unprofessional treatment of you.
There are other bands out there who take what they do more seriously and who could probably do with the work you guys are seemingly so nonchalant about. Why would a venue like that give anyone serious work when they can just get guys like you in and pay them in drinks vouchers after they profited on the admission cost with some lie about whether people were there to see the band or not?
I hope this is a lesson to anyone else out there that this kind of thing is sub-par and shouldn't really be tolerated.

He didn't seem all that upset about how he was paid, just hat he would have preferred they paid him BEFORE they paid their tab. Since theyre going to play there again, next time they wont have to run up a tab. He doesnt care about making money from the band, they just want to play. Leave them alone and let them do what they want. You dont like it, then you dont have to play there. But don't sit there behind your computer acting all high and mighty because this guys band doesnt mind playing for the deal they got.

Otherwise, a deal's a deal no matter what it is. I don't believe in the "no band should do this because its bad for all bands." I worry about my band and what we can offer a bar owner.
I may go back but I would make sure everyone knew exactly what we were exptected to get paid and I would hold the bar to it.

Personally, I'd be screaming p*ssed off, but OTOH I'd never have put myself in a situation like that where some pond-scum club owner treats musicians like dirt.
If the OP is all right with getting shafted, it's not my position to tell him he's wrong. But allowing this type of weirdness is one of the reasons why there will be another thread in a day or two or three with yet another musician griping about getting screwed ....
If you're having a problem being treated with respect, just take a look in the mirror for the answer ..... | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
