Gig tomorrow night

Sign in to disble this ad
We're playing at the Inn at Montrose again tomorrow night. Last time was Black Friday, and we filled the place, hopefully tomorrow night is the same. At least this time they mentioned us in their ad. Our drummer's father owns the local shopper paper (delivered to every address in a 3 county area) and he does a nice display ad for us, I think it helped.

I'm a bit worried since we're playing until after midnight and I turn 38 at midnight, and I've got a hunch my wife has something devious plotted for the occasion, but it should be a blast.

We're pulling out a new medley for this one:

I Will Survive (in the style Cake did, FUN bass line) into Voodoo Child into Superstitious (Stevie Ray Vaughn style). At the end of Superstitious, the guitar player is going to tease the lick from Voodoo Child while I change my bass line to the break from Tom Sawyer (it actually fits with the Esus9 chord he vamps on) under the solo then walk it back into a final chorus of I Will Survive. It seems wacked out, but it hit beautifully at rehearsal last night. The sax player we have sitting in for a few tunes thought it was pretty cool.

We're going to change our stage set since we were a bit too spread last time - the guitarist absolutely refused to have me run a DI into his PA, since he doesn't want to do anything to me with the tone I get from my GK rig as he "absolutely LOVES the sound I get". I'm lucky to be playing with a guitar player who is nowhere near the stereotype of a guitard. If we get a good recording and he puts it up on the site, I'll post a link after the weekend.

With 2-3 feet of snow I doubt you will need to worry about it. I have (had) a gig tomorrow night that will no doubt either get cancelled or will have nobody show up. I hate snow!

We're used to snow here - the forecast on the Weather Channel is for snow showers, only a couple of inches, 50% chance of snow. If that holds, we'll be going on. The drummer and I both live less than a half mile from the bar, the guitarist is 1 mile away.

It's a local thing - most of the crowd in this town actually does live w/in 5 miles or so. I know the rooms at the Inn are all booked for the weekend, so worst case there'll be a captive audience or 40 or so. Last time we had about 150 show up (not bad for a town of 1200). Still, even if it's only a small crowd, we'll still play our butts off and have fun doing it.

I enjoy it here, though having to drive to really go out shopping can be a pain, the community is extremely supportive of the music program at the school (where I'm the choral director and dept. chair), and appreciative of musicians in general. Plus, it's a nice place to raise my family, though I hope the gas leases they're doing don't ruin that. A bunch of Cabot employees got busted for dui and drugs working on the rigs a couple of weeks ago.

The gig went well, we got less than 1" of snow, which, to be honest, is well below what we're used to getting. Usually we're the most pounded town when the snow comes to our area, but it was just flurries. The crowd was less than half what we had last time, but I think the threat of the storm and Christmas parties conflicted. A couple of my co workers were doing shopping down in Scranton at Montage mountain, and they got hit harder than we did in town, so they ended up not coming up.

Still, the crowd was about what we expected, and the owner was cool about things - he did decently at the bar, and the cover despite the lower numbers was decent, so we still got our pay and will be booked again.
