Indulge me, I know it's a bit soppy, but I have to do the proud dad thing.
Played a gig at the weekend with my 14 year old daughter, what an awesome experience, she played a faultless set with the stage presence of a pro.
Then after the gig she asked me if everyone knows that she is my daughter? I said that a few people did. Thinking that she didn’t want to be known as my daughter for teenage image rating purposes. To my surprise she said ”oh that’s a shame cos I have the coolest dad ever”. High praise indeed from a teenager. :hyper :

I only let her move on to guitar and drop piano after she had learned a reasonable amount of theory, it was a kind of carrot and stick thing "get to this stage on piano and you can start guitar". I think the best way is to just expose them to as much as possible without pushing too hard, It has to be fun.

I have never had as much fun as when I get to share the stage with my son (drummer). His timing is spot on and has great dynamics.
It is a wonderful thing when your family is into music. Apparently you raised her right! Carry on!!!!

My grandpa started teaching me piano when I was about 5, but it was classical music. Then I tried music in elementary school, but I thought it was boring. But once I picked up a bass and started playing music I actually liked, I was hooked. I had taken lessons in the past but found them boring, too. What hooked me was being able to look up tabs online and teach myself a song in a few minutes with no real knowledge. It might not be the "proper" way, but being able to play something I both recognized and cared about is what did it for me.
And, awesome about the gig with your daughter!

I also have kids (18 & 13) and seeing them (and filming them) on stage is an amazing feeling. Like you, I can't help but to gush with pride. They did pull me on stage (ok, it was the deck in my backyard) to play some bass during my oldest's HS graduation party, and I will never forget it. It was the only time I've ever played in front of other people.
Best of luck to you and your daughter.

While it was a true gas to share the stage with him, it was even more fun to watch him with a group of other kids blowing full tilt on some jump blues.

If they are starting to go crazy, I can play a simple song on my acoustic guitar and they go into an almost trance like state while watching me. They don't have the fine motor skills yet to tackle an instrument (they are 4), but they try their best to sing and clap along with whatever I am playing or listening to. One of them is really interested in drums, and the other is totally going to be a guitar player/singer/frontman. I really hope that, when they start playing, they think I'm cool enough to play with. As "cheesy" as a family band sounds, I think it would be incredibly fun.
You and your daughter look like you are having a great time. My hat goes off to you both. Keep it up. |

One of my favorite bands, Chevelle, started with three brothers. The bassist left/was kicked out depending on the side of the story, but he was replaced with their brother-in-law.
A) Super proud parents
B) Super awkward holidays
