Gigs gone right...

I've posted about quite a few "gigs gone wrong", and thought it is time to post about a gig gone right.

I moved to Boston a few years ago and the scene is a good one, but tough to break into. Last week I got my first call for a blues gig since moving here. I'm not a blues player, but I dig the music so I took the gig.

We did one quick rehearsal, only going through about 30% of the material and planned to handle the rest on the fly at the gig. The rest of the band were all very experienced blues musicians so this was normal for them, but hitting a new tune cold had me a little nervous.

We did the gig last night, and despite the guitar player ditching an hour before the gig and having to call in a sub last minute, everything went well.

I even got a nice write up on the singer/bandleader's blog:

What can I say about Zac? I wanted to funk up this gig and I could have called 15 different blues bass players to back me up but I wanted to depart from the swing and the boring marches and get some ass shaking in this gig. It's always a risk calling a non-blues bass player for a blues gig, but I had the phone book out and I decided to make this call. I am so glad I did. Everything I was worried about vanished in the first couple of songs. Zac was so solid, so Right On, and so on board for this whole venture -- I couldn't have picked a better guy. The people in the club loved him, and I am about 10 people back in the Zac Fan Club queue.

I had a blast doing the gig and I think I just might get some more calls!

This is the stuff that keeps me playing.

Anyone else want to share their "gigs gone right"?

That is a hell of a compliment! I'm glad that you were able to have some fun and spread your joy among the others.

I will edit this post later with a story. Good job man.

Had one a few months back that went very well. We were suprised at how nice the place was (a pleasent change from the usual suprises), how good the sound guy was (Helped us setup/teardown, and I nearly asked him to turn -down- the bass), how great the audience was, and we got several invitations from other band members to do more shows together (even in our town rather than theirs).

It was very encouraging. Made me feel a lot better about what we're doing.

I've just joined a new band, we had my tryout, which very quickly became a practice, a few weeks ago. After which, they wrote this in their blog

"...Also, (we) have pleasure in welcoming new bassist Joe to the forray. A remarkable talent indeed.
As yet uncertain whether he'll be debuting at The Grand on May 9th but keep your eyes peeled for him at (our) shows coming soon - Good Luck Joe!!"

well, after that we had one more practice, on the wednesday before the aforementioned gig. I ended up playing it, and it was possibly one of the best gigs of my life so far! I've just had my third practice with them yesterday, in which we started to write some new songs! And the more I get to know em all, the more and more sound they become!

So I've got an awesome bunch of people, making awesome music that I love playing and listening to, and who I'm apparently, very musically compatible with! couldn't be going much better really...

Sound like a good situation. That's pretty rare.

I just had a good gig It was my first gig. the only problem was the drummer dropped his sticks...twice. And I started to laugh and stoped playing because my friend did something weird But from what I hear on this forum, no gig goes perfect.
