I've posted about quite a few "gigs gone wrong", and thought it is time to post about a gig gone right.
I moved to Boston a few years ago and the scene is a good one, but tough to break into. Last week I got my first call for a blues gig since moving here. I'm not a blues player, but I dig the music so I took the gig.
We did one quick rehearsal, only going through about 30% of the material and planned to handle the rest on the fly at the gig. The rest of the band were all very experienced blues musicians so this was normal for them, but hitting a new tune cold had me a little nervous.
We did the gig last night, and despite the guitar player ditching an hour before the gig and having to call in a sub last minute, everything went well.
I even got a nice write up on the
singer/bandleader's blog:
What can I say about Zac? I wanted to funk up this gig and I could have called 15 different blues bass players to back me up but I wanted to depart from the swing and the boring marches and get some ass shaking in this gig. It's always a risk calling a non-blues bass player for a blues gig, but I had the phone book out and I decided to make this call. I am so glad I did. Everything I was worried about vanished in the first couple of songs. Zac was so solid, so Right On, and so on board for this whole venture -- I couldn't have picked a better guy. The people in the club loved him, and I am about 10 people back in the Zac Fan Club queue.
I had a blast doing the gig and I think I just might get some more calls!
This is the stuff that keeps me playing.
Anyone else want to share their "gigs gone right"?
