My analogy might be that (solid) bass players can be compared to (solid) defenders. The defender might not get all the glory or the credit, but the team, as well as knowledgeable fans, definitely appreciate a good defender.
Extended range bass players, on the other hand, are like defenders who compete with the striker and try to score goals themselves.
I'm joking of course.

That definitely doesn't apply to guys like Anthony Jackson, and a bunch of extended range bass players. I mainly play a six-string these days too.
