Everyone I play with seems to think that I am awesome at bass, but I blame this on them never hearing any good bass before. Anyway, I was turning the corner at school the other day and a member of a former band was in turns the corner grabs me and turns me around to see another guy behind me (who i will call Eric for sake of not knowing his name) and says "here you go Eric, heres the guy you need." then turns to me and says, "Gonzo (a nickname for me), he's making a classical band and needs a bass player." It felt good that I would be the first choice as a bassist and that i had such a good reputation as a bassist. However I am not interested in the offer because of other engagements.

Same kind of stuff happens to me. People are always asking me "what band you in", "You're really good, where can I catch you play", etc... Truth is I'm not in a band and ever band I get into ends up being me playing 40 songs I hate and 1 that I got to choose, which by the time the rest of the guys can play it, I'm sick of hearing it.
I guess I can hold my own to a point, but we all can't be Wooten's or Hamm's can we?
Take it for what it is worth, a really sincere compliment and take in the fact you might actually be better than you think you are.

Noone listens

Im 16 and a bunch of starting bands have asked me to join but I usually turn them down because the only stuff anyone at my high school likes is metal and emo/punk stuff. Im in the band at school and after class is over il be sitting there playing and people always come up and marvel at it. I uslally respond with something like "its nothing special" . I was in a band but the other two guys were hard to count on and all their songs sounded exactly the same and it kind of slowly folded. |

My friends keep telling me that I'm too good for my band, which I friggin' hate. The reason they say it is because I don't play slap... seriously I think that's it. Which is ironic because I'm really starting to dislike slap and I am slowly phasing it out.

Usually punk or ska, which I hate. It gets embarassing at times. People just don't know enough about bass. I admit, I'm happy with my abilities, but I'm no pro. |

I do play punk and ska, even though you guys seem to not like it, but I get offers from emo to heavy metal to poppy nonsense.
The sad part is I'm a freshman, but everyone thinks I'm the best the school has... |

Why? Because I'm the only one who can't slap a million miles an hour on a six-string.
However, I'm also on call the most for the same reason - I can hold the groove down, keep a good bottom, and stay out of the way when the music gets busy.
Who knows.

Who knows. | I know how that feels too. A fellow bassist who's regarded as the best metal bassist and best bassist by alot at my school. He came to my house to jam once . He was playing all these fast licks , tapping , slapping. While he was doing this I was kinda backing him by playing a groove behind him. Most of the time he was there I was just groovin on the spot. After awhile he looked at me and said " So what can you play? I was kinda taken by this. Since I wasnt tapping and slapping all over the place he didnt think I could play. ONe of the moments you just have to keep your mouth shut and move on. |

breaking the trend, i'm 18 and love punk and ska, so bite me.
i grew up on it along w/ some r&b, jazz and funk.
i guess that's why i keep getting told i'm good by other musicians but feel completely out of place at a store where everyone else is wanking as loudly as possible and i'm playing scales and running through some of my bands songs. |

Play Aeroplane. Play Too Many Puppies" when I'm trying to write a simple 4/4 line for a project. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
