I mean, I don't know the arrangements you made, but if I loan an instrument to a friend, I usually want it back sooner than in "a few years". So if he messed that up, who knows man... Not trying to set you guys up against each other, just sayin'.

But call the airport, complain, ask to view security tapes (I don't know if that's legal or anything but might as well try), do whatever, just make yourself a problem and they should just pay for a new guitar instead of dealing with you. |

Anyone else have stories about equipment being ruined by airport baggage handlers/security? |

I was an aircraft mechanic so I didn't handle baggage but there's a reason why I carry everything I possibly can on. I like to ship larger items via UPS if I have time or if it doesn't have to be at the location immediately (i.e. shipping a vacation purchase home). With UPS you at least have insurance with the option to purchase more then the $100 every package ships with for free. Only things that get checked for me are extra clothes (I ALWAYS carry at least 1 full spare change of clothes with me) and I plan for at least a 1 day delay in my checked baggage, just in case.
Now the disclaimer, I've actually never had an issue with my baggage. Never seemed to be disturbed, smashed or lost. I've just been down in the baggage wells and cargo holds and watched these people work. Just remember that a lot of them are pissed off at something or other and your baggage is a good place to take that anger out. Unfortunately they know that if they damage or steel something the airline (who they're generally pissed at) will have to pay for the item so it's a win/win for them. Not all employees are like this but enough of them are to ruin it for everybody.

Obviously none of us know whether or not it was your friend or the airline who smashed up the guitar, but for me, loaning almost anything to anyone is too big of a risk. If anyone`s going to damage a guitar of mine it`s going to be me. I know I`d just freak out way too much if something like this happened and I couldn`t put the blame on myself. |

First, he told me what he was going to do, then would ask if that was okay. then, asked me to open it, up and hold it while he scanned the gig bag. then he swabbed it and analyzed it for (I can only assume drug and/or anthrax residue). I did ask him if he wanted me to demonstrate that I could actually play it.
"no, that's not necessary, sir".
I'm not much of a fan of country, but this one "United Breaks Guitars" is pretty funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo

So take this as a life lesson and don't lend out your things if you care about them cause you never know what can happen !
And if I still played guitar I would definitely not let go of my lp !
