Talking Grape Room Gig in Philly - Christmas Songs

Sign in to disble this ad
My band played our Philly debut last night at the Grape Room in Manayunk. We played with two great bands (both had great bass players btw) one named Dap, the other Sons of Linus. Not sure if either of their bassists are on here, but want to give props to them.

We played pretty well, got some people dancing, which is great.

But for me, one of the evening's highlights was Dap's closing song.

He introduced the song, saying it's the only Xmas song they cover, and they start playing a slow funky beat/chord pattern ( i ii v I believe)

He starts singing, and the song sounds very familiar...All the sudden it hits me - he's singing about the best Xmas present ever -

"It's my d!ck in a box!"

(SNL original here)

The crowd loved it. It was hilarious. Possibly best cover song choice ever.

I just had to share. If I can get video from someone I'll post it.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Nice one! I love the Grape Room, we've played there several times (actually had our CD release party there on Nov. 19).

I live in town, so let me know the next time you play at the Grape.

LOL! Waz up dude, its Troy. I auditioned with an original band in Somerdale, NJ and they were talking about booking Grape St. Did Grape St move back to its original location?

Yeah, it's back in the original location, actually on Grape St. (but called the "Grape Room" now). It's that small, sweaty venue everyone came to love. The bigger venue just didn't seem to work.

Glad to hear the gig went well, and even happier that the Grape moved back. Some great times/memories in that dump.

Hey Troy! Good to see you as always.

So, yeah it's the new (Old) grape room, back on grape st.

My old old band (2 bands ago) Stillicide had a residency at the old (new) grape st pub that was down on main st (was that confusing enough? ). There was some good times at that dump too!

Regardless, I'm glad Philly is still trying to keep original music alive in some fashion. Dobb's just opened back up on South St. as well.

Yeah, I always loved going to the Grape Street Pub. Good music, cool scene in there. And the apartment was a nice touch. Also always liked the Overpass, though I forget the name of the Mexican Eatery it was located over. Only thing I didn't like about the area is parking.

Yeah I remember playing there with XRAYCAT and Stillicide. It was a big place, but lacked that small club/city feel. Never been to the old room( which is the new room I take it). BTW I have a Lakland 55-02 on order. Are you still rocking the Lakland? It took me a while, but I finally got one. Had to sell a few MusicMan basses to make it happen, but I think I will be happy with that choice.

Peace

I think that I played there (obviously before shut down and reopen) in 1994-ish? Great place if it's the same one.

Still rockin the Lakland. Would love to get a 55-02 myself, definitely need a fiver.

I've always associated you with MM bases Troy. But I loves me a Lakland, so I'm sure you'll enjoy. Just a heads up though - I hope you aren't expecting to get the same biting tone you always had.

Unless you're mellowing out in you old age...
