I Had a Very Similar Experience When The Bassist From The Vibrators Used My Rig.
GK 700RB Mark II --> Ampeg SVT 810E --> USA Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe
He Was Not Happy Because It Was Not A SVT Head And Precision Bass
He Plays In A Very Famous Punk Band From The UK.
He Was A Really Cool Guy, Until They Played... |

Nobody will want to touch your bass again because you can't show off on something you can't play! |

| | | | Standard courtesy for jams dictates that you bring your own bass and leave the amp alone. Dont touch it period. This guy seriously disrespected you and your equipment, doesnt matter if he's got chops he's still an *******. If you see him again and he wants to jam through your rig tell him to bugger off. |

| | | | I definitely agree with the bring your own bass rule.........sure, there might be exceptions for someone you know will be respectful with your gear but thats about it.
even with my Squier VM, I dont care if it's a cheap bass, you aint playing it if i dont know you.
The only part of an amp I touch on an open jam is the volume, to turn it all the way down to plug or unplug in my bass (if i dont know where the mute button is).
it's not limited to musicians, some people are respectful of other peoples things, and some are not.
In the OP's case, you were well within your rights to turn the amp off and politely as for your bass back......you ask politely once..........

I would! Amps are fine for that situation, but a bass is a personal thing and I'd use my own before using the one on stage. Maybe "reminding" him by turning it down to avoid clipping would put him in his place that he really DOESN'T know much about equipment, etc!
That said; if I DID use the bass on stage, I'd DEFINITELY be respectful of the equipment! Just another opportunity to try more gear than I've used before! Viva la differance!

How hard is it for people to show up with their own gear to gigs of any kind? If you can't bring your own gear, that's your problem, not mine.
I did have my 6-string fretless one time at a gig, and the opening band bassist asked to borrow my bass because he had gotten mugged on the way to the show (judging by his black eye, I believed him). It wasn't nearly as satisfying watching him fumble around the fretless as it would have been if it were any other kn0b that simply didn't show up prepared. He respected my gear also, so I respected that.

and off topic: that must have been the worst gig of that guy's life! Mugged and forced to play an unfamiliar six string fretless? I'm assuming that wasn't what he normally plays when I say, "ouch!" -- for him and everyone in the club.

Problem solved...
There's lots of bass players that can play circles around people. They usually call them "unemployed". Most of the time, people appreciate a nice powerful groove/feel that leaves space to make them look good when its their turn way more than someone wanking away all the time.
Experience, in both cases, is key. Knowing what notes NOT to play. Knowing where NOT to waste time running.
