Gues What I Get to Play at Church?

Sign in to disble this ad
So my pastor has been doing a series on disfunctional families. I get the song list for this wee and see We Can Work It Out. I'm thinking there's no way its the Beatles tune. There must be a different one. And then the charts and mp3 isn't there like normal so it must be the leader doing it accustic only. Get to practice and the director goes "its the beatles. The pastor suggested it. The downloads arent' there because its a secular song." We use a Christian database so that would explain it. I'm so excited. But a couple questions.

The file I pulled for tabs had Paul doing octaves through the verse. In the chorus it had him doing his riff once then doing it an octave lower the second time through. Is this right? I need to get the remix of this so the bass is more upfront.

Cool, we're doing a varied worship set but the opener is Samba Pa Ti. We did Jessica a few weeks ago - fund stuff.

The Beatles is awesome, although I was hoping you were going to say Whamola, that way I could justify building one to use at church.

You should be impressed that I got most of the letters in there ("gues") and in the correct order. That day I went to school wasn't a total waste.

Higher Ground is a Stevie Wonder song and while the RHCP cover may be cool it's not a RHCP song...

We have played Doobie Brothers "taking it to the streets", Lenny Kravitz "One", The Beatles "Come Together" and a few other "secular" songs. Still trying to talk the worship pastor into letting us do Chameleon for a prelude some time.

The lone secular piece I played during my Jesus gig era was a single instance of "Takin' Care of Business," which tied into that day's sermon. I hid a hard hat on the drum riser, and put it on during the song's break; lots of laughter.

.. as the vicar suggested for one of the Hymns at my wedding (only joking I hoped ).

That's the cool thing about this. Our pastor suggested it. In between services he told me how great my bassline was. The music director told me the same thing and sent me an email yesterday saying lt looked like I was having fun. Luckily compared to the rest of Paul's work it was fairly easy as I only had an hour on Friday to get it down.

I hated playing at church... When the fastest I go is eighth notes, and three notes a song, that's when I start to get angry. It's like praise and worship makes up for being so simple and horrible by saying "We're all good in God's eyes". I swear, the pastor said that one time. "It doesn't matter if you're good or not, God is your audience and he's pleased that you're playing for him". Our band sucked...

I think it cool and effective to use stuff like that if it fits the message.

I played at a church where we used secular music to tie into a message. Here is a list of some of the songs that I can remember off the top of my head.

Let my love open the door-Pete Townsend
My Sweet Lord-George Harrison (changed some of the back ground vocals)

Ball and Chain - Social Distortion
Story of My Life - Social Distortion

The SD songs went over huge. Fit the message perfectly and really reached out to people who were seeking.

Beatles Songs we used:

Help
All You Need is Love
When I'm 64

Thats all I can remember off the top of my head but there were a lot more over the years.
